Problem deleting PDF file, copyright infringement involved.

    I have deleted one file – https://knitsofacto.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/downton-no-resale.pdf – and as hoped am now seeing a 404 redirect, but a later version of the file – https://knitsofacto.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/downton-no-resale.pdf – is still active but not appearing in my media library so cannot be deleted. It is important that I delete this file as a third party is currently selling the link to it via their website and in so doing is infringing my copyright. This person is also making the sale under another party’s copyrighted trademark, making me an unwilling party to a further copyright breach.

    To keep things running quickly around here, files are held in multiple caches through a separate system. These caches are usually cleared within 3 days.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: Deleting blogs and/or blog content does not remove any indexed items from the SERPs (search engine page results). Google and Bing only clear their caches of deleted indexed content that produces a 404 (page not found) every 3 – 6 months.

    Thank you. In this case the PDF file mentioned wasn’t visible in the library when I logged in to remove the PDFs so I have been unable to even attempt removal. I have been totally confused by this.

    Hi Annie,

    The media cache can sometimes take a while to clear leaving those items up a bit longer than when you’ve deleted. It would’ve gone to 404 in time, but given the needs of your situation I cleared your blog’s cache and the file is deleted from there as well. Visiting the page just now, I got the 404 error as expected. :)

    Anyone with that page saved in their browser history will continue to see the information until their browser cache is cleared locally — but new visitors will not have access to the PDF.
