Problem formatting custom menu

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like my menu bar to have the following tabs

    1. Home
    2. Karen’s Book (which is a custom link to http://www.freedomfromworry.wordpress.com)
    3. Other resources (which is a custom link to my astore)
    4. About Karen (which has two sub pages under it
    -Karen’s Causes
    -Karen’s Thoughts on men

On #4 instead of showing up as one tab with a sub menu it’s showing up as 3 different tabs.

How do I correct this. I’ve tried. Everything. In the pages section I have them labeled as under the parent page of About Karen but when creating the custom menu it seems to remove them from under the parent and put them as their own page.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there – since you’re using a custom menu, making About a parent of the other two wouldn’t automatically be reflected on the menu.

Instead, the sub-menu structure needs to be set manually in your custom menu. To get that working, I went into Appearance > Menus, and clicked on the two sub-pages one-by-one, dragged them over slightly to the right, and let go, making them sub-menu items of About Karen. I then saved the menu to make the changes live.

You can learn more about creating sub-menus here:

Just let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for taking care of that for me! You ROCK! I’ll be sure to fill out the support experience survey. :)

One more question. The “Other resources” tab in the menu is a custom link to my Amazon store. I did not see a way to have that link open in a new window. Currently if someone clicks the “Other resources” tab in the menu bar it takes them to my Amazon store (causing them to leave my site). Any way that link can open a new window??

  • My pleasure!

Yes, you can set a menu link to open in a new window.

First you need to display the “Link target” field, by following the instructions under “Can I configure link targets?” here:

    Menus

After you check off the “Link target” box that you see in the screenshot above, a new checkbox will be displayed on each your menu items which says “Open link in a new window/tab.” Just check off that box for any menu items you’d like.
