Problem inviting Followers
-
Up until Friday, October 28th, I was able to send out invitations to people to become followers of my blog.
Now, when I open up the Users page, ‘Follower’ is no longer an option to invite someone to be. When I looked up the problem in ‘Help,’ the information still says that I should check the ‘Follower’ option–though it does not exist on my screen.
Any advice on how to get back to inviting someone to be a ‘Follower’?
Thank you!

Thanks for responding. My problem is that when I get to that page and click “Add User,” I am sent to a list of roles for which I can invite people. On the old page I used to receive, the bottom role was “Follower.” That is no longer an option. Also, on the old page, I could enter 10 email addresses at once, and provide a custom message. That is also no longer an option. Something has changed in the WordPress format, it seems. Any advice on these details?

Hi there, sorry that we did not catch that, but your site newwaysministry.org is not hosted directly on WordPress.com, but instead uses the “Jetpack” plugin to add this functionality.
The way user roles work on WordPress.com directly is different than how it works on self-hosted WordPress sites, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, Network Solutions, etc.
However you can find help here in the Jetpack support forums, and they will be able to help you troubleshoot this issue on their end. Specifically it appears that it may be related to a plugin that is adding custom user roles that are not included in WordPress by default, and may be conflicting.
We are not able to help with plugin conflict issues because we don’t have plugins on the free WordPress.com sites we support, but they will be able to walk you through this: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack/
Thanks!

Hi folks,

I understand that their site is not hosted by WordPress.com, but the issue described by @newwayministryblog is met in precisely the same way on my WordPress.com account at the Users page. Whether one chooses the “Followers” or “Invites” tab, when you click the “Add User” button, a field to enter usernames or email addresses of those you’d like to invite is followed by a list of user roles, only one of which may be selected. The “Follower” role is absent from the list. In addition to @newwayministryblog’s word that this option used to be present as the last option in the list there, we also have the following attestation:
- The illustration in the Adding Users to Your Site section of the Invite People to Your Site support page, where the Follower role is clearly present as an option.
- Common sense. If the Follower role hadn’t been present in the past among the user role options offered when inviting users, then how else would one have invited Followers?
