Problem – organize content

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi all! I’m having a problem to ogranize a content on my blog.
    It’s hosted at wordpress.

I would like to get the following structure:
    one article per one page
    pages are shown by categories

I read about Page/categories plugin but it seems I’m unable to install it due to wordpress hosting.

If I switch to posts (not pages) I won’t be able to have one post per page, right? All posts in the category will be at one page in chrono order, right?

Is there a way I can structure the pages? possible solutions:
    1) change Theme to the one with page/category link
    2) ask support people to install the plugin and connect it to my blog?
    3) ….?

    any suggestions????? PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE HELP!!!

We cannot help without a link to your blog, starting with http.

And there are several pages in the FAQ on Pages vs Posts and other answers to the questions you’ve asked. Try a search there first.

Hi, thanks for the message. I did search in FAQ but all I found was that I needed a plugin.
Could you please post the links to the other solutions?

    the link is
    http://umnitsa.wordpress.com/

    it’s in russian btw

If you were told you needed a plugin, you were searching in the wrong forum. Plugins don’t work here.

    A Post and a Page

so this practically says i have no options to structure content in the way I need it?

No, that’s not what rain said. What you want to do is fairly easy. You need to set your blog to display a static front page. On that page, you put links to the categories. Then when a person clicks on the link, they are taken to page that shows all the posts in that category. Then they click on the post they want to view. By definition, only one post will show on the posts page.

You got hung up thinking that the plugin was your only answer. I suspect you may have done a Google search rather than a wordpress.COM search, because this issue has come up several times in the past few weeks.

And please link your blog to your user name as explained in the sticky, 8 Things, at the top of the forums.

Also, there seems to be some confusion around what is a post and what is a page. Impossible to structure your blog until you know the difference. A blog is not made up of static pages; a website is.

vivianpage, thanks for the suggestion. I did it already. My home page is a static page, and I have Categories widget on.

Since there is no way of linking pages and categories, I’ll convert my pages to posts.

But now I’m facing anothe problem. When you click on Categories at the home page – you go to the latest post (I set to display 1 post per page) and the only way to browse through posts in the category is to click multiple times on Old posts link.

Any suggestions how I can see the entire list of posts within a category?

Raincoaster, I do understand the concept of both. I thought there is a way to separate all posts to display at one “piece of space”.

As you have discovered, the number of posts on the categories page is a function of the number of posts that you set in settings>reading. You will note that I didn’t say anything about setting that to 1. You will want to set it to a larger number. They will never see the entire list, just the number of posts you set. For example, if you set it to 15, they will see 15 posts and then the next page link.

When the person clicks on an individual post, they will see just that post on the page.

I don’t read Russian so I can’t tell which of the sidebar items are categories.

And yes, you should convert your pages to posts, but not for the reason you mention. The reason you use posts instead of pages (and why raincoaster keeps pointing you to that FAQ) is because there is only one posts page on a blog. Plus pages, by definition, are designed to hold static content.

And this is the last question I answer until you link your user name to your blog. It’s annoying to have to scroll up to track down your blog address.

Vivian, thanks for the suggestion. My goal is not to display more than 1 post when I go to a Category. If I set 15 posts – i would get a long list of posts displayed. What I want is that only one post is displayed per page and when I go to a category – there are only links to the posts.

But it seems the only way out is to install plugin which make me move from wordpress hosting.

No, you’re missing the point of what Vivian said. You asked: Any suggestions how I can see the entire list of posts within a category?

She answered: As you have discovered, the number of posts on the categories page is a function of the number of posts that you set in settings>reading. You will note that I didn’t say anything about setting that to 1. You will want to set it to a larger number. They will never see the entire list, just the number of posts you set. For example, if you set it to 15, they will see 15 posts and then the next page link.

You do not need to install a plugin, you just need a better understanding of how things work at wordpress.com. Read people’s responses carefully.

@vladsv: (“What I want is that only one post is displayed per page and when I go to a category – there are only links to the posts.”)

You can switch to another theme: Chaotic Soul, Ocean Mist and Hemingway do that. Or you can switch to Solipsus and create an Archives page. And maybe themes that display titles along with the beginning of each post would also be ok for you?
