problem restoring backup from previous host to new host

  Hi, I switched to a new host after my website crashed on the previous host. I uploaded the basic information on a one page website and it is working.
  I would like to restore the original site that I worked hard on building. I have a few backup files that I saved from the cpanel of the previous host. they are not zip files that I can open and extract the files. one is a sql file, and one has a .tar.gz ending, and another has a .sql.gz ending. I tried importing these files with phpmyadmin on the new host cpanel. but one had an error notification and the others made the site show a blank white page. It could be due to the differant root, which was under public_html there, and in the new one it is without that file or due to some other tweaks that need to be done, but I don’t know what could really be the problem.
