Problem today selecting multiple paragraphs

  • Unknown's avatar

The manual says: ‘You can select all paragraphs and then apply styling to all blocks selected. ‘. I do this often, but today the behavior appears different. It appears I can only select ONE paragraph at a time. I could not do a multi paragraph ‘quote’, so I selected each paragraph, one at a time, colored it blue, and had to let it go at that.
    – Also, when trying to change the text color, I would select the whole paragraph, but only part of it would change to the new text color. I had to do it a second time to select the text that did not get changed, and change it in the second attempt. That used to work.

  • Hello there,

Happy to help you with this.

The manual says: ‘You can select all paragraphs and then apply styling to all blocks selected. ‘

That should still be the case – can you tell me what post/page is being worked on please? Also, can you point me the direction of which blocks are being worked on please.

Also, when trying to change the text color, I would select the whole paragraph, but only part of it would change to the new text color.

When changing the colour, are you using the the inline colour settings, or the colour setting on the right hand side of the paragraph block options?

    Many thanks.

The post I had a problem with is the current post in my Rich Investing blog, Sept. 11. https://richinvesting.wordpress.com/

The section that I wanted to select and make into one quote is in the section of that post with heading “Geo Political”. It is colored dark blue, which I did by selecting each individual paragraph and changing the text color. So, I sort of made it look like one big quote, but it was much more work than usual.

Look at my post of August 14, “Another Boring Record High”, and in the Geo Political section on why healthcare costs so much in the US, toward the bottom is a quote that worked correctly. The behavior of that function has changed. In that quote, I was able to select multiple paragraphs at one time and under the paragraph action, select “quote”, and it was honored after I posted the article as you can see.

When I am trying to change the text color, I must be using the inline color settings because I don’t use anything on the right hand side.

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for that detailed information.

When I am trying to change the text color, I must be using the inline color settings because I don’t use anything on the right hand side.

Ok, so you should be seeing this, when selecting multiple blocks and changing the colour.

If you’re not, you should click no.1 in the screenshot to open up those options.

Can you tell me if you’re copying and pasting into WordPress, from the outside please?

    Many thanks.

I write in MS Word, then copy and paste into the block editor on wordpress.

    I use the Firefox browser.

  • Hi there,

Our developers are looking into an issue where it can be difficult to select multiple blocks correctly especially if your cursor also includes any of the whitespace outside of the blocks inside of that selection.

For example if you were to use your cursor to “click and drag” to select all blocks, but at the end your cursor also trailed off into the margins to the left or right as you were dragging. with that in mind I’m curious if you try to select multiple blocks, but take care to make sure your cursor starts at one end and stops at the other (top to bottom) without going into the margins to the side.

Does this allow you to select the quote formatting block for multiple paragraphs?

I tried this on my end and it worked for me, so I am hoping it will work for you too. Here is what I see when I try. Video at the following link: https://d.pr/v/80PlTW

I am attempting the same method that has worked for me for the last 4 years. I am not selecting white space outside the boundary of the sentence, except when I try to select multiple paragraphs that is unavoidable as I scroll down.

If I edit the current post, it let’s me select multiple paragraphs as usual, and the preview shows it has been rendered correctly, with a big quote mark and indented.

I tried a draft, with the text in question from yesterday pasted in, and I cannot select more than one paragraph for the quote. The draft is out there now, only have 1 draft.

I have a screenshot of my screen when it is not working, the whole screen. I can send you the word doc to look at. I don’t see a way to attach things to this discussion.

    Hi there!

The screenshot will be very useful for us to take a look at. You can upload the screenshot to https://wordpress.com/media and let us know. We can look at your site’s media library for the screenshot.

    Thanks!

I have uploaded the screenshot to my media library today. I was using the only draft document that I have, which was pasted in from MS Word. I could only select one paragraph. Firefox is current, up to date, just checked.

  • Thank you — I’m not able to duplicate this yet, even on the draft you have. But just to confirm, are you having this issue only when working with content from MS Word?

If you just paste a few paragraphs (say, these) into a blank draft document, are you able to select them both?

Also, would you be willing to rule out browser issues by trying another browser to see if you have the same issue there?

Rich says: I always begin in MS Word.

If you just paste a few paragraphs (say, these) into a blank draft document, are you able to select them both?
Rich says: That is what I did to create the draft we are looking at.

Also, would you be willing to rule out browser issues by trying another browser to see if you have the same issue there?
Rich says: I tried MS Edge and Chrome and they both appear to work fine. I did not go all the way to publish anything, but I can select multiple paragraphs, apply the quote action, and in a little preview pane to the right of the text, that I don’t see in Firefox, the appearance is correct.

How do we proceed? It appears to be a Firefox issue. Do you report it to Firefox? I don’t think I can technically describe it.

What is your preferred browser these days? I am an old IT mainframe guy, but I don’t keep up with browser technology. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi there!

WordPress.com works fine on the latest version of all the major browsers. You can see the latest browser versions here: https://browsehappy.com/

Is your version of Firefox updated to the latest version? I wonder if it’s an outdated version that’s causing the issue. Please try updating the browser to the latest version and see if that helps.

Let us know how that goes. Thanks for your continued patience while we try to troubleshoot this. I wanted to let you know that we appreciate your cooperation. :)

My Firefox automatically updates. It is current at 92.0 64 bit. Windows 10, it auto updates also.

  • Hi there,

Do you have any add-ons installed on Firefox? If you do, please temporarily disable them and see if the issue is resolved.

Well, well, well !!! I only had one add-on, the “Honey” price comparison checker. I disabled it, and I can select multiple paragraphs, and when I change the text color of a sentence, the entire line is changed in one operation, and I was using the in-line features, not the ones on the right hand side.

So it looks like I can get back in operation. Honey has been an add-on for a long time (like a couple of years), so I’m not sure what messed up.

I can test anything else you wish if you want to check other options out. Thanks for your assistance!

I was a product development manager for BMC Software in the past, with responsibility for a mainframe monitoring product. I also had the customer support function, so I know what you guys do. You have my compliments, you did a GREAT JOB!!!

  • Perfect, I’m glad you were able to find that! It’s certainly an unexpected conflict!
