Problem uploading new photos
-
The last couple of days I haven’t been able to upload to new posts I want to create. I’m not near my upload limit. File sizes are max 16mb for a photo but the average is 10mb. They start uploading but then the progress bar resets and after a while I get a message saying that there is a problem with the upload. Any ideas?????
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What browser and version are you using? If on Chrome, make sure you’re on the https version and not the http version of the site. Users are reporting that solves their problems.

I just tried to upload using the https version but it didn’t work. I’m using Firefox version 21 on Windows 8. This problem is starting to bug me…..

@rain: not at all!
@russellchapman: 10 or 16 MB files are absurdly large. I uploaded one of your images to my tests blog and it took more than a minute. If you don’t have a fast connection, or if you have a temporary connection problem, things may go wrong.
Even if your problem isn’t related to the file size, you should seriously reconsider. The image I used is 300dpi, 6016×4016. Uploading such huge files means you waste your storage space, your pages take too long to load (for a visitor with a slow connection the browser may even time out before loading all the images, and then your visitor will see nice empty rectangles instead of your photos), and you get worse quality on the post (because images downsized by the browser lose some color and sharpness). You should use an image editing application to downsize copies of your images to a reasonable pixel size, and upload those copies instead of the originals. What size is reasonable depends on whether you want the images to be clickable or not (you don’t seem to have decided on this).

Hi Raincoaster. I made a smaller version of the photo which I just put into a post. Is strange though, file size has never been a problem before. Maybe WP have changed there policy? Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.

@ Justpi
Point taken and noted for the future. Thanks for taking the time to make the suggestion. -
Yes, it looks like WP racheted the maximum file size downward, and a good thing; we had a number of people recently who deleted files from their media library to “free up” space, only to find the images gone from their blogs. If they’d uploaded reasonably sized files, it would never have become a problem.

The reason why I had uploaded big files before was so that people could see them in hi res. At the end of the day, and this is just my opinion, I think my photos are worth looking at in detail ;) Not like the output from Instagram that you just glance at ;)

@russellchapman: You’re welcome.
What exactly do you mean by “so that people could see them in hi res”? Browsers display images at 72 no matter what their original resolution. If you mean you want people to see your images as wide as possible, again this doesn’t justify 6016×4016 images: no user has a 6000px wide screen! As I already pointed out, you don’t get best quality/detail when you view an extremely large image, you get it when the image is not downsized by the browser. A 6000px wide image or a 3000px wide image viewed in, say, a 1024px wide screen won’t be better than the same image downsized by you in Photoshop, uploaded to your blog and viewed in real size. -
PS Notice I said I uploaded one of your images to my test blog: the image was 9.2MB, and I had no problem uploading it, so the issue isn’t on WP’s part.

I tried uploading on a test blog I have. Anything about 10mb uploads fine, but for my blog here, anything over 5mb seems to make a problem. Anyway I will stick with smaller uploads in the future.
