Problem using emoticons in wordpress markdown code segments.

Regarding my Blog: joecodeswell.wordpress.com
Problem: INSIDE my markdown code segment delimited by
`, WordPress.com changes ‘:)’ to ‘<span class=”wp-smiley emoji emoji-smile” title=”:)”>:)</span>’.
I believe whatever is inside a markdown code segment should remain untouched.Thanks for the help.

It’s my understanding, though I could be wrong, that the only emoticons that we can use on WordPress.COM hosted blogs are found here > Dashboard > Settings > Writing

Formatting
Formatting Convert emoticons like :-) and :-P to graphics on display -

I don’t mind the change taking place outside of my code segment. However, inside the code segment I think whatever is there should remain untouched.
