Problem with changing the size of embedded images

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I can embed images in my text, where the text wraps around then, but whatever I do, I can’t seem to get them to be bigger than a thumbnail size. I’ve selected full-size (mine are 698×400 px) when embedding and even manually increased the size from the image editor once it’s embedded in the text, but no change in size.

Here are 2 good examples where the text wraps around an image that is larger than a thumbnail:

    Could you help me out?

    Merci!

    Hi,
There are various ways to change the display dimensions of an embedded image. I typically change the size by dragging the small squares that appear at the corners and in the middle of the sides of an image when you left click on the image. I then click the update button to save the modificaton. You may also change the dimensions at Image Details, a pop up page which is displayed by clicking on an image and then selecting the edit option, an icon which looks like a pencil.

    Hi There,

    Neither are working! :(
I start by embedding the image at it’s full size (not thumbnail) with text wrapping around it. Then, I go to the text view and left click on the image, grab the corners to expand it, but when I let go it automatically goes back to the size it was embedded at, which is about the size of a thumbnail.

If I try to increase the size using the image edit options, again, nothing happened to the image in the text…

    Help.

    Hi there,

Can you share a link to a post where the images aren’t showing up large enough?

I checked your latest post at http://theleader.ca/2015/07/14/team-meetings/ and the image is showing up at the full width of the post’s content area.

If you’re seeing the issue in that post, please make a screenshot of what you see, so I can understand what the image looks like on your end. You can upload screenshots to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy.

    Hi rachelmcr, thanks for responding!

I just added a media file, which is a screenshot as you suggested. This isn’t live – I just took a screenshot of a preview where I inserted an image left-justified and one that is centered. For either of them, if I try to drag the corners to increase/decrease the size, or go into the editor to “custom size” and change the values, nothing happens…..

    What to do think?

    Hi there,

Thanks for sharing that screenshot! However, it’s a little hard for me to tell what’s going on there, since the changes aren’t saved/published on that page. Would you mind creating a new page, saving it as a draft, and adding the image there?

That way I can take a look at the draft page and troubleshoot that image size issue with you there. Once we getting it working on the draft page it should work everywhere else on your site, too. :)

No problem! I just saved a page called “Image Test” with an image embedded at full-size.

Let me know what you think – and I hope you enjoy my choice of lorem ipsum:D

Thanks! Your lorem ipsum is making me hungry. ;)

I see what’s going on now. The Hive theme is designed so that images added to a post or page that are aligned to the left or right can only be up to 50% of the total width of that content area. That ensures that the text around the images doesn’t get too cramped.

For featured images like the one at the top of the post at https://hivedemo.wordpress.com/2014/07/21/idea-selfies-with-purpose/ the image can be up to 60% of the total width, which is why it’s a bit wider.

One way to change that is to remove the alignment on the image. (You can do that by clicking the image in the editor and choosing a different alignment from the options that pop up for that image. For example, removing the alignment completely will allow you to add a larger image.)

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

ok, I see. I tried it with a 400×400 px image and I can reduce the size once it’s embedded at full size.

But, if I center (so no wrapped text) or choose “no alignment” , I still can’t control the size, even to make it smaller…..is that normal?

rachelmcr, if you don’t mind chiming in again, I’m having an issue making the space between my text and embedded images match throughout the page. I created a Home page and saved it to draft.

The last “paragraph” called Featured Guest & Authors with it’s embedded image is too close to the paragraph above it (The Toolbox). If I do ‘enter’ to add a line, it makes the space too big. But all the others in the page are identical and ok!

I inserted every image in the same way and gave them identical margin features….What am I doing wrong? :-/

    Merci!

    Hi there,

But, if I center (so no wrapped text) or choose “no alignment” , I still can’t control the size, even to make it smaller…..is that normal?

What size (either the exact pixel size or thumbnail, medium, or full size) did you choose for the image? I’m not having any trouble with that on my end, so it will help me investigate to know exactly what image sizes you’re going for.

The last “paragraph” called Featured Guest & Authors with it’s embedded image is too close to the paragraph above it (The Toolbox). If I do ‘enter’ to add a line, it makes the space too big. But all the others in the page are identical and ok!

Since you’re using images aligned next to each paragraph, the spacing between each paragraph depends a bit on the length of the paragraph as well as the height of the image that goes along with it. It also depends on the size of your browser window or mobile device, since the layout will adjust to fit the size of the screen you’re using to view the page — you might want to try resizing your browser window to see how it changes on different-sized screens.

If you’d like more control over exactly how those paragraphs and images are spaced and the layout on that page, I’d recommend trying some of the tips on our Advanced HTML page. (That does take a bit of knowledge and practice with HTML code, and there are resources on that page if you’d like to learn more about HTML to do that.)

    I hope this helps! :)
