Problem With Deleting Images To Reduce Storage Space

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello All
A few months ago, my blog reached its 3.0GB storage space and I had to delete some images.
So I went into Settings, then Media, then Library and deleted several images.
I realised later that this has meant that a lot of my old published posts don’t show their images anymore and look like this- https://myfashionslashlife.wordpress.com//?s=fabryan&search=Go

My blog is currently about to reach its max of Storage space and I’ll need to delete images. Could someone please tell me the best step by step way of doing this, so I dont lose the images on my published posts?

    Thanks in advance
    Biki

  • From your Media Library filter for unattached files and bulk delete them.

I suggest you review this support document first to understand how this works before you delete images, because deleting images is an irrecoverable action: https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/unattached-files/

Thanks for your response. I read the above link, and went to my Media Library and deleted the images in the Unattached Files section. However there were only about 30 images.
As my current storage size is 2.5 and the max is 3.0: I am approaching my limit fast.
Is there anything else I can do to delete more images without deleting them from my published old posts?

    Thanks

    Hi Biki –

It will be difficult to do what you wish without impacting old posts. You’d have to download all the current images, run them through a program which reduces them in size, and then delete the ones off the server and replace them with the new, smaller images, and relink each one.

Or you could just upgrade your plan. The premium plan is $99 a year – ($8.25/month) and includes 13GB of storage. If you go that route and start reducing the size of your images going forward, that space should last quite a long time.

Just an idea. If your site is growing and popular, it’s worth it to invest in it some!

You’ve raised a good point, think I will just go Premium.

Its not a lot of money… my blog makes no money at the moment, so its a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. But I know in this game you have to invest.
Thanks a lot for your input.
