Problem with display of drop-down menu on tablet
-
I have added a drop-down menu to my blog and, while there is no problem on desktop, it is not displaying correctly on tablet. Instead of the main heading and arrow, I get a white box with the two sub-categories showing. This happens no matter which browser I use, suggesting the problem is with WordPress. I am using 2022 theme. It doesn’t help that the ‘how-to’ is not the way that the thing works.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
By default the Twenty Twenty Two theme shows automatically expands “drop down” menus on mobile, so the are visible on mobile.
To explain, there is no way to “hover” on mobile, so dropdown themes do not work on phones and tablets the same as they do on a computer, since these devices do not use a mouse.
There is not an option to force those to be collapsed by default (they always show on mobile) but you do have the option to upgrade to the WordPress.com Pro Plan, which will allow you to add a custom mobile menu plugin to gain more control over how menus are presented on your site: https://wordpress.com/plugins/musicliturgyandme.wordpress.com?s=mobile+menu
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for your reply.
I am well aware that one cannot hover on a tablet but I have never seen a site where the drop-down menu is displayed. The normal procedure is to click and it appears. Are you seriously telling me that the theme does not do this? If not, it rather negates the usefulness of a drop-down at all. What is the point if, essentially, all items are displayed by default? More than half of all website visits are not on a desktop. Surely this is a basic requirement and should not require a plug-in?Incidentally, on a mobile, the menu icon does not respond at all.
It would also be useful if the preview versions actually showed what the site looks like on tablet and mobile. At present, they simply look like a smaller version of the desktop. There is no indication that the drop-down is visible. I only know because I looked at my blog on my tablet.I am using wordpress.com and a theme because I do not have either the time or the energy to customise a blog which I have started as a hobby. I was under the impression that by going down this route the basics of the site would be automatic. I would have said that, in this day and age, the display of a drop-down menu on a tablet was a fairly basic function.
If this theme is unable to support such basic functionality can anyone point me in the direction of a theme which does?

Every theme has its own features and quirks, so they all don’t behave in that manner – the behavior of the menu is determined by the theme authors.
I’d recommend browsing the theme directory and viewing theme demos of themes that you like to get an idea of how the menus work before deciding to switch. On each demo page, there is a selector in the upper left of the screen where you can change the view to Desktop, Tablet, or Mobile devices.

I hope that helps!
