Problem with Domain Creation: ".us" unavailable

    Hi all,

I’d like to explain my problem first. I’ve been spending a few hours shopping around for domain names. Finally found a “.us” domain that is perfect for my new website. According to nearly every other domain seller besides WordPress, it is available. However, each time I attempt to create the domain within a new account on WordPress.com, any “.us” domain is noted as unavailable.

So, I am officially confused. On WordPress, I can only choose from .com, .org, .net, .me, and .blog for any domain name. My question is – are these the only options everyone has available when purchasing domains on WordPress? Or can I choose the “.us” domain using a different process?

The only solutions I have found to this is the following:
    1. Purchase the domain & hosting from another seller
    2. Install WordPress onto the website so that I can use its features
    -or-
    1. Purchase the domain from another seller
    2. “Map” it to WordPress by purchasing WordPress Premium

However, both options come out to be more expensive for me. What I would prefer is to be able to choose the “.us” domain and be able to purchase the “personal” WordPress hosting option, as that is most agreeable with my pocket and would be easier to do.

Can anyone out there help this confused soul?

    Thank you in advance,
    Jemmy

    Hi Jemmy,

According to nearly every other domain seller besides WordPress, it is available.

It’s not currently possible to register domains with a ‘.us’ extension through WordPress.com. However, you can register the domain elsewhere and ‘map’ it to your site here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

What I would prefer is to be able to choose the “.us” domain and be able to purchase the “personal” WordPress hosting option

You can use any paid plan to map a domain, including the Personal plan. Select the plan from your Plans page:

    https://wordpress.com/plans/

Then add domain mapping for your chosen domain:

    https://wordpress.com/domains/add/

Come back to me if you have any questions!
