problem with email address identity

    I wanted to open a new account with WordPress. I have NEVER used the sire before!!
    I entered my email address and it told me there is already an account with that address, BUT I HAVE NEVER OPENED AN ACCOUNT BEFORE!
    What can I do as I want to use this email address but I have had to use a different email address??

    Hi there, what is the email address in question? You can add it normally here and it will be redacted from public view, like this (email visible only to moderators and staff) but WordPress.com staff, who are flagged on this forum thread, will be able to see it and assist.

    @frenchpriest – as @justjennifer said you can add the email address in question in a reply here and it will be redacted for everyone aside from Staff. Once we have that information, we’ll be better able to advise.

    Thanks for your email. Sorry I haven’t replied sooner.
    The email address in question is:

    As I say I have NEVER used this on a WordPress site but it says an account already exists for this address. Please can you address this problem as I really need to use the maxhaven address to open my account, not the jack.roberts address. This is because I keep all my writing affairs separate from personal, and the site is to promote me as an author.

    Thanks for the email address.

    The maxhavencreationsgmailcom username account was created in February, and the account was verified, so whoever created the account also had access to your email account at the time, because they clicked the verification link we sent to that address to complete the account creation process.

    If you didn’t create this account, I recommend updating your email password if you haven’t done so recently, as it’s possible someone else has access to it in that case.

    Regardless, as the owner of the email connected to the account we view you as the owner of the account, so you can continue using it, or close it if you prefer.

    I really need to use the maxhaven address to open my account, not the jack.roberts address.

    So you want to use this Gmail address for the frenchpriest username account? To do that you’ll first need to change your maxhavencreationsgmailcom account to a different email.

    With Gmail you can do this without having to create a brand new email account: If your email for this account is, for example, myemail[at]gmail.com, just change it to myemail+wp[at]gmail.com (you can use whatever you want after the +). Gmail sees both as the same address, but our system treats them as different emails. Once you verify the change, it will free up your original Gmail address to use for your other account.

    At that point you can delete your maxhavencreationsgmailcom account if you don’t plan to use it.

    Thanks for your advice.
    It’s disturbing to think someone actually opened a wordpress account with MY email address. But someone also hacking into my facebook account.
    I’ve changed my password like you suggested.

    I’m not clear how I change my maxhaven creations gmail account. I understand what you say about how to do it, but WHERE do I enter this amended email address?

    Also if do this what happens to all the emails I have on my original Max Havne gmail accont?

    Finally, are you saying I can then use (email visible only to moderators and staff) to open a WordPress account, or the new version: (email visible only to moderators and staff)
    (for example)?

    If someone has full access to your Gmail and someone is able to hack your FB-account, it’s most important to change your passwords asap and to activate 2 Step Authentication for your Gmail and FB. Also check your computer and browser for spyware. Also never use a free or open wifi, or use a public computer.
