Problem with formatting text on pages

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

    I’m having difficulty with getting the text on my pages to format the way I want it to. I’m trying to create a space between certain lines ie:

    Tour Dates

    A Victorian Christmas will be touring the UK in December 2011

    1st – MaudslayThursday, Coventry

    but it keeps coming out as:

    Tour Dates
    A Victorian Christmas will be touring the UK in December 2011
    1st – MaudslayThursday, Coventry

    I can separate the lines in the editor, but as soon as I publish it, it bunches back together. I’m using the Quentin theme, but I don’t think this is a CSS-related thing as I’m experiencing the same problem with another blog I have which uses the Mystique theme. I’d be really grateful if anyone could point out what I’m doing wrong!

    Many thanks

    PS – I’ve also tried cutting and pasting from Word, but the same thing happens – it all inputs okay, but bunches up when I publish it.

    Don’t paste from Word. Word is designed for print media and does not speak web so typically it will mess up your blog. There is a “paste from Word” icon on the lower tool bar that strips out the bad code Word makes, but it is not perfect.

    Open that page in the editor. Select all the text, everything, in the page and then from the format pulldown on the left end of the lower tool bar row, select “paragraph” and see if that does not fix the issue. Pasting from other sources such as the web, or MS Word can bring in code that can negate the paragraph spacing that normally occurs.

    Hi

    Thanks for the swift response! I’ve tried doing as you suggested and it doesn’t seem to work, I’m afraid. I’ve inputted the text directly into the visual editor (as opposed to pasting) and it’s still bunching the text all together when I publish it. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

    What browser and browser version are you using?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Firefox. It’s whatever the latest version is as I only installed it last week. :-)

    I’m using Firefox as well, latest version, and not having any issues. Are you working in the visual editor or in the HTML editor?

    Can you give us a link to a place on your site where this has happened so that we can take a look at the markup (source code)?

    Also, have you tried using a different browser to see if it is only a FF issue or a general issue?

    Hi

    I’m definitely using the visual editor. I’ve just tried in Internet Explorer and am having exactly the same problem. The page is http://avictorianchristmas.org/tour-dates/ – if you wouldn’t mind having a look at the source code when you have a spare minute I’d be very grateful!

    Thank you

    Something is weird and it might take quite a bit of time to figure out exactly what is going on. Since you have the CSS upgrade, we can do a “fix” though. Add this to the bottom of your CSS:

    p {
    margin-bottom: 10px;
    }

    You can adjust the 10px value as you see fit.

    I’ll just note that the markup (HTML source code) for that page looks normal. I was thinking perhaps instead of the paragraphs being wrapped in “p” tags that they would be wrapped in “div” tags, but they were not.

    Excellent! Thank you so much for your help. For what it’s worth, I only started experiencing these problems after I purchased the Custom Design upgrade – maybe there’s some sort of bug associated with it?

    Either way, thanks again for all your help!

    I think that staff might be doing some tinkering with themes as there have been several issues pop up lately that lead me to that conclusion. In the original CSS for the theme you are using, there was no declaration for paragraph spacing (which is what we just added). I’m not sure if that was the result of staff tinkering with the CSS or what.

    Oh, and you are welcome.
