Problem with getting Facebook sharing to work
-
One more question for today — I set up sharing with Facebook. The support document said that once that was done a publicize option would show up in the publish portion. I am not seeing one. I am figuring that I missed something in the setup but I am not seeing it — can you advise? Thanks –
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy Steve,
The Publicize option should be appearing on the right-hand side of your Edit Posts screen as shown here:
I found that box on the following post:
https://laughingbearpress.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=163&action=edit
Could you take a look and let me know if it’s appearing on your side as well?

I closed out last night and when I reopened things this morning there it was — maybe I caught myself with an old page open after I did the change — sorry. Any sense how long it takes before something I publicize with this feature shows up on facebook?
-
It should show up immediately. However, it will only be effective for future posts after you’ve enabled the feature, not past posts. Have you published anything since setting up the connection? If so, was the post in draft form when you added the connection?
If the post was in draft form, the Facebook connection would not have been selected by default. You would have needed to manually select it using the box shown here:
For future posts that you start after Publicize is connected, the box should be checked automatically.

I have not posted since — I usually do a weekly “newsletter” style post so I will check next issue — thanks!

Hi Jeremy — Progress! I just posted and the facebook setting worked. One more question — it put the first part of my post in and then a link to the post (which looked a bit redundant). I will cut and paste what showed up on facebook below — any way to get it to not repeat so much like that? If it is easier to see on facebook itself my address is https://www.facebook.com/steve.mclellan.79.

One more question — I am going to set up a facebook show page separate from my personal account. Would I change the sharing pointer to that? Or set up both? I don’t want to swamp my friends with everything I post to the show page unless they really want it — but I do want them to get the weekly update. Thanks — Steve

Hi Steve,

Awesome! I wasn’t able to see the post on your Facebook wall (I believe due to your privacy settings), but I’m betting it looking something like this (with the duplicate text).
When you share a post to Facebook through Publicize, it automatically grabs a bit of your post to appear as the intro on Facebook. You can customize this here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#using-publicize
Can you try changing the custom message? This should override the default text sent through Facebook.

Just to be clear, you’re looking to share your articles automatically to your page, but not to your personal account. Is that correct? If so, you would need to disconnect your personal page and connect your new page here:

I think I may have figured out what happened. I had typed a little in the “custom” box (which was checked).
Then I chose the option to have a shortlink. The final facebook post included my custom text — some of the post, then jumped to the promotion box I expected. Had I not added the short link would that have avoided the repetitious text appearing?
I changed my facebook privacy setting to Public so you should be able to take a look.
On the second question I would like to post to both accounts (at least for a while). So basically i want a publicize share to my personal Facebook and also to my show page facebook. Do I just connect a second facebook account (once i have it set up?)

Hey Steve,
The latest post I can see on your Facebook page is from August 4th. I’m not quite sure why I can’t see everything. Perhaps the individual posts are still limited to friends only?
Then I chose the option to have a shortlink. The final facebook post included my custom text — some of the post, then jumped to the promotion box I expected. Had I not added the short link would that have avoided the repetitious text appearing?
Ah – that indeed could be the problem. The shortlink will always be added automatically when you’re publicizing so there’s no need to add it in manually. Can we give this a go on your next post and see if we experience a different outcome? You can either A) choose not to edit the custom text box or B) you can add your own custom intro to the post without including the shortlink.
On the second question I would like to post to both accounts (at least for a while). So basically i want a publicize share to my personal Facebook and also to my show page facebook. Do I just connect a second facebook account (once i have it set up?)
Yep! You should just be able to connect an additional page under Settings -> Sharing. Then, new posts will go to both places automatically.

Hi Jeremey —
I did my weekly posting — I don’t seem to be able to get the sharing function to allow me two Facebook posting places. When I click to “add new” both show up but it makes me choose which to post to.
I have to confess I may not fully understand how Facebook stuff works (especially how personal pages and other pages interact).
The end result is that I posted and it showed up on my show page (facebook.com/laughingbearcomedy) but not at my personal page (www.facebook.com/steve.mclellan.79). I set all the privacy settings to public so you should be able to see what is going on.
Any ideas?
Thanks — Steve

Hey Steve,
I apologize for not clarifying. The issue here is that your profile and your page are associated with the same Facebook account. So, you can only associate either your page or your profile with your site, not both. This only happens when the page is managed under that particular profile. Does that make sense?
As an example, if you have Profile 1 that manages Page 1. You could only Publicize to either Profile 1 or Page 1 from your WordPress.com site.
If you moved Page 1 to another profile (Profile 2 to be simple) on Facebook, you could then connect Profile 1 and Page 1 since they’re managed under different accounts.
-
Thanks Jeremey — that helps. I will see if I can move the page to a new profile or I will figure out a workaround. Steve
