Problem with Gutenberg galleries (and other stuff!)
-
Hi
I’ve been using WordPress for nearly 10 years so am not a novice. I opened a new wordpress site recently for a photography club and the chosen theme uses Gutenberg by default – no option to switch to Classic Editor.
Obviously I’m using a lot of pages with images. However, when I try to add a new gallery the images are struggling to appear.
I click on ‘add a new block’, choose tiled gallery and the block is inserted. I click on add images from my Library and choose the pictures – I then click insert. And it simply goes back to the page of the empty block.
If I repeat this process often enough it will eventually add the images but it’s starting to get seriously frustrating. Even once the images appear on the editing page, if I then choose to preview the page the block often isn’t there.
Having finally added the images, there are no captions to say whose picture is whose, despite having this info attached to the media file. If I hover over the picture no captions appear. There is no option in tiled galleries to type a caption over each image, although this option does appear in a columned gallery and the slideshow block. But I shouldn’t have to spend time typing them in at all if they are already there with the media image.
And of course there is no spellchecker and Grammerly, my browser spellchecker, doesn’t work with Gutenberg though it worked fine with the Classic Editor. So I have to copy all my posts, including their html code, into Word on my computer, spell check, then re-upload to WordPress!
I really want to give Gutenberg a go, but actually, it’s awful and things which used to take minutes I’m still at hours later :-(
I use Windows 10 and Firefox browser, with no add-ons other than Grammerly. All help appreciated.

Hi there,
I click on ‘add a new block’, choose tiled gallery and the block is inserted. I click on add images from my Library and choose the pictures – I then click insert. And it simply goes back to the page of the empty block.
Can you check if this still happens after you clear the browser cache, or if you log in using a different browser like Chrome?
If it still happens, please check if any errors appear in the browser console while you’re adding the gallery. You can find instructions how to get to the console here:
Those screen shots are a bit out of date to what you’ll see in Firefox now, but the process is the same. Take screen shots of any errors you see, and upload them to your site’s media library, and we can take a look there.
Having finally added the images, there are no captions to say whose picture is whose, despite having this info attached to the media file. If I hover over the picture no captions appear.
This is a known issue with galleries in the block editor, and has to do with the way the editor accesses and displays metadata for images. This is actively being worked on over on WordPress.org, so once they figure our a fix there, it should also work on WordPress.com sites again.
And of course there is no spellchecker and Grammerly, my browser spellchecker, doesn’t work with Gutenberg though it worked fine with the Classic Editor.
Grammarly not working with the block editor is also a known issue, but this is something Grammarly needs to fix on their end. I know they are aware of the issue, but whether or not they’re working on it I can’t say.
While it’s not a comprehensive grammar checker like Grammarly, Firefox’s built-in spell check does work with the block editor, so perhaps consider enabling that.

Hi Kokkieh
I am SO sorry for not following up on this before now. I’ve had some issues I won’t bore you with, but been without computer access.
I used Edge as the browser and it worked like a dream. Firefox, however was still causing the image errors.
I tried clearing Firefox cache and it made no difference.
I’ve uploaded 2 screenshots of the error messages from the web console to my site’s media library – if you would be able to take a look I’d be grateful.
Firefox spell checker wasn’t working. However, I’ve managed to find a solution by installing a dictionary add-on and it’s now working great, so thanks for suggesting that!

Ok, first please make sure that Firefox is up to date: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-release
If that makes no difference, try clearing both the cache and cookies: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/clear-cookies-and-site-data-firefox
And, if that makes no difference, try with all add-ons disabled: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-or-remove-add-ons
If that still doesn’t work, please let us know which version of Firefox you’re running.

Thanks for the speedy reply.
Firefox is up to date. Clearing add-ons (I only have 3), cache and cookies didn’t help unfortunately.
I’m using Firefox 79.0 (64 bit).

Is there any change if you change your tracking protection to Standard at about:preferences#privacy ?
-
-
That’s odd! Is this always happening on new posts/pages, or only when you edit a specific page?
-
Both :-(
When I create a new page/posts it takes several attempts to load images into a slideshow, gallery, layout grid etc.
If I then later edit the slideshow, grid or gallery it’s a right faff to get the images replaced or added to.

Have you tried using a different browser? If not, please check if Chrome, for example, has the same issue.
I also want to rule out a network issue as a possible cause: please unplug your modem/router for a few seconds to clear it’s connection cache, and flush your computer’s DNS cache – you’ll need to check the Help page for your specific version of Windows/MacOS on how to do that.
If possible, can you also check if using a different internet connection makes any difference?

Hi Kokkieh
Please see earlier in thread for things I’ve already tried. MS Edge browser works beautifully, but Firefox does not.
I know it’s not a network issue because the reason it took me so long to reply initially was that I was having computer problems. I’ve had a new router, had my broadband checked for faults and it’s fine, and had a new hard drive – the problem is just the same as it was before.
I’ve cleared the DNS cache again just in case but am still having the issue :-/

When images struggle to load, or take several tries to load, this can also be due to limitations in the hardware. It’s possible that Firefox 79 taxes your machine a bit too much and is causing issues with website functionality.
A few things…
1. What computer and operating system are you using? Around how old is the hardware on the machine?
2. Have you tried another browser like Google Chrome (we asked before, but I can’t find a reply to that)?
3. Depending on the age of your machine and the version of Firefox that you are using, consider that this version of Firefox just might not work well for what you want to do. As Firefox themselves recommends at the link below, it might be time to try another browser until Firefox releases another new update to their browser: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-firefox

Hi Dean
As mentioned earlier in the thread:
I had a brand new hard-drive on my machine last month. The laptop is less than 3 years old. I’m running Windows 10, which is up to date. Good amounts of memory.
The website works beautifully when using MS Edge, but not when using Firefox (which is up to date). I never had any issues with WordPress sites until the Gutenberg editor was introduced. Some of my WordPress sites still use the classic editor and there is no problem with media. The 2 sites which use the Gutenberg editor both have the same issues with media. Surely Gutenberg should be compatible with the handful of major Browsers most people use. If not, and the rollout continues, there are going to be a lot of requests to this forum for help I would imagine.

Hi there,
There have been reports of issues with the tiled gallery block since the latest update that may be related to the issue you are encountering. I was able to replicate the issue myself, but it was definitely intermittent. I’m trying to pinpoint the issue so we can report it internally.
When this happens for you, how many images are you normally trying to add? I noticed that when there is only 1 image I’m trying to add, I had no problem, but when I tried to add seven, the issue you described happened to me as well.
Let me know and I will look further into this.
Thanks!
-
Thanks so much Darnell! It is also intermittent for me, but doesn’t work about 80% of the time. I find it happens even if trying to add or change just one image, but it’s worse if adding more than one.
I’d really appreciate you looking into this. Obviously as my site is for a photography club I’m working with images constantly and it’s super frustrating.
