Problem with mapping a wordpress.com website

  • Unknown's avatar

I registered a domain with Goddady and is currently hosted with Goddady. I had a wordpress.org page and bought the mapping plan ($13), thinking that I could somehow merge these two websites. But somehow, these two websites are not properly connected.
If someone in wordpress clicks on my name, they are not directed anywhere…. if they click on the “read more” link to read more about my post, they will be directed to my website with goddady, but an error message will appear.
Basically, is it possible for me to merge these websites? I would like to post something on my website with goddady and have it available for the other blogs at wordpress to read…
Or is it that merging these websites is not possible?
    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Naomi,

Let me clarify a bit. It is possible to “merge” your two sites, but not in the fashion I believe you’re looking for.

Your domain can only point to one place at a time. So, when you map themangakainyou.com to WordPress.com and change the name servers (which effectively tell your domain where to look for information), it will no longer work with your GoDaddy hosting. A similar situation happens when you point the domain to your GoDaddy hosting service (your WordPress.com site will no longer work).

Your domain can’t work with GoDaddy hosting and WordPress.com hosting at the same time. So, we’ll need to select one or the other.

If you would like to switch from GoDaddy hosting and have your site hosted at WordPress.com instead, it is possible to move all of your content over following the instructions here:

    Export your website’s content

Basically, that will copy the content from your GoDaddy site to WordPress.com so the same content is available. Then, you could point your domain to WordPress.com and readers should be able to find all your posts. Does that make sense?

Let me know if you have any questions about domains, hosting, mapping, etc after reading the above! Also, let me know how you want to move forward (stay with GoDaddy or move to WordPress.com).

Thank you so much jeremy. I was feeling a bit down lol.
In that case, then i would like to be hosted through godaddy only.
My last question is: since it’s not possible to merge them as i thought, then how can i ensure that everything i post in my website is also visible in the “recent post” section for other bloggers to see?
Or should i cancel the 13 dollars mapping option and use the free blogging option instead?
I understand everything you said about the website not being able to be hosted by these two sites. The confusing part is that certain links connect my blog post at wp to my current website and others dont :(
Also, what does it mean to integrate wordpress blog into my website? I read somewhere that if i open a file (www.forexample.com/blog) i can integrate the blog in there.
    Thank you jeremy :)
At least i know that it wasn’t my lack of technical skills lol

    Hi Naomi!

Should i cancel the 13 dollars mapping option and use the free blogging option instead?

If you’re going to stick with GoDaddy for your domain registration and for your hosting, you don’t need the Domain Mapping upgrade here at WordPress.com. That upgrade is only if you solely wanted to use your domain here, not at GoDaddy.

The confusing part is that certain links connect my blog post at wp to my current website and others dont

Could you point me to a specific link that you’re referring to (one that is working and one that isn’t)?

Also, what does it mean to integrate wordpress blog into my website? I read somewhere that if i open a file (www.forexample.com/blog) i can integrate the blog in there.

When people mention integrating a blog into a website, they can mean a few different things. Normally, this means that they’re setting up a web page for their business, but want to have a blog component. In that scenario, they might setup the blog elsewhere (not on the same service where they have their whole site setup).

Normally, this takes the form of a subdomain or a subdirectory:

    Subdomain: blog.themangakainyou.com

    Subdirectory: themangakainyou.com/blog

In some cases, those sites would be completely separate entities. To go with an analogy, it’s like building a separate building on your property that is separate from your house. It’s part of the same overall entity but separate at the same time.

WordPress.com doesn’t support subdirectories, but, we do support subdomains. So, you could have content at themangakainyou.com and have blog.themangakainyou.com display your WordPress.com site. Does that make sense?

The larger question is what you’re looking to get out of having your blog appear in two places (at GoDaddy and at WordPress.com). I would discourage you posting your same blog posts in multiple places. It’s generally best to direct individuals to one spot (whether it’s a subdomain or your hosting at GoDaddy) to find your latest posts. Does that make sense?

If you could expand a bit about what you’re ultimately looking to gain from the switch, perhaps I can explain a bit further!

I guess i was looking to get more traffic :(
Since there are a web of blogs about drawing i wanted to have a chance to have my website exposed to all of them :,(

Ah, I totally get that! Growing an audience can be hard. I don’t think breaking up your content between two sites is what you want to do. That may end up just causing more confusion amongst your readers. I would highly suggest sticking to one.

    Hi Naomi!

It looks like you were able to cancel your upgrade, but a refund wasn’t issued. I have issued a refund of $13 back to your account. The funds should be available within the next few business days. Please let me know if you need anything else!
