Problem with Photobucket images

  • Unknown's avatar

I thought I would begin with the WordPress forum, just in case other bloggers are experiencing the same problem or someone knows the correct diagnosis and solution.

Yesterday afternoon, the images to which I link on Photobucket stopped displaying on my blog. One sees the image for a split second, but it is then replaced by this message: “Sorry. This person moved or deleted this image.”

My initial thought was that someone had broken into my Photobucket account and either deleted the images or reconfigured the privacy settings. But a quick visit to PB showed that all was well.

I then decided to visit my blog with a different browser. My regular browser is the Mac version of Google Chrome. I then opened my seldom-used Safari and visited my blog. Everything was well. The images were on display as intended. I confirmed matters with Firefox. That seemed to suggest that something was wrong with Chrome.

I emptied the cache. I reset the settings. I even replaced the Chrome folder with a backup from the day before. Nada. I haven’t been able to fix the problem. I have rechecked the settings and everything seems normal.

Has anyone experienced this problem before? Anyone have a solution? I’d also appreciate if you would visit my blog and tell me what you see and with which browser you are using.

    TIA.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi. I’ve just visited your site using Google Chrome on Windows 8.1 and everything seems to be fine. All images are loading just fine for me.

Is your Google Chrome up-to-date? You can check here: http://browsehappy.com/

    Thanks,
    Tom

Yes, my Chrome is up to date. So the problem would appear to be specific to my browser alone and not others.

Yes. I’ll tag this for staff attention so that they can take a look at the problem.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    The same here.

All images linked from a third-party service (here: mostly Apple, other third-party hosters) are disappeared; there are only empty frames visible. When you click (Mac Safari) on the “?” it will switch to a new page with the highres version (as supposed because I linked it). Here you can see what I mean:

Since 15 hrs or so. (Note: I edited the first ten pages of the blog roll manually and uploaded the images to wp.com server because the blog would look UGLY at the first glance. wp.com images are looking fine.)

Tested on Mac, iPad & iPhone (on the iOS device’s Safari there isn’t even the question mark where you could access the highres version). Latest operating systems, latest Safaris.

Question to the community (with other OS): Can you see all the images in the linked (above) posting? Thx in advance for looking into it.

Hi rossau. I’ve just visited your site and all of the images loaded fine. I’m running Google Chrome on Windows 8.1. The images worked on iOS 7 on an iPhone for me as well.

    Thanks,
    Tom

It just occurred to me to see how my blog looks on my iPhone. The images are not showing up on the iPhone! So I guess the problem is not specific to the Chrome browser.

More info about my iPhone. The images appear initially in Safari. They only disappear when I turn the phone horizontally (maybe this always happened and I just never noticed), and they remain gone when I return to a vertical position. However, they return when I refresh the screen. The images also show up just fine when I turn on the reader’s version (or whatever it’s called).

But there is definitely a problem viewing the images on my Mac with Google Chrome. As I said, the problem started yesterday afternoon.

Thanks for the extra information akimel. Hopefully the staff will be able to sort this problem out for everybody.

I believe I have fixed the problem. It was a Google Chrome problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome, and that appears to have fixed things. Pics are now displaying properly again.

@ Tom: Thanks for checking that out. Are you sure that you tested exactly the page of which I provided the link in my previous posting? Because I “corrected” (hotfix) manually the first 10-15 postings in the blog roll—they are okay because I put the pics on the wp.com servers… Here you have the link once more as some kind of a reference (there are 20 images where I can see only empty frames):

    http://wp.me/poZqi-gXp

The problem still exists here!!! In my blog there are about 4,000 postings looking completely destroyed under iOS 8.3 (the newest iOS) and ALL browsers (Safari, Chrome, Opera). The same on Macs (OS X 10.10.3) + latest Safari (although with Opera it works fine on Macs).

Tested with iPad 1 (orig.) and iOS 4.3: All fine!

@ akimel: You wrote: “More info about my iPhone. The images appear initially in Safari. I made exactly the same observations on my iPhone 6! But on iPad Air 1 and iPad Air 2 changing the orientation doesn’t help at all. No embedded (hotlinked) photos and images since almost 30 hours now (exactly: since Thursday, Apr. 16, 01:00 CEST).

Where do they display properly again? In all browsers (incl. Safari) or Chrome only? You mean that you’ve fixed the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome? Sorry but I can’t confirm that. As said before: The problem still exists and it’s really NASTY!

Thanks again for checking that out.

Hi it’s probably related to people using hi definition screens (Retina), they can no longer see images.

As of yesterday WordPress uses “srcset” in the code for images via an url. (outside hosting service for pictures such as Photobucket and sxc.hu)

That’s when people on newer iPads, phones and computers no longer see images as soon as they have loaded and people on older devices do.

I have the same at my blog marvelknits and am waiting for a modlook

  • Unknown's avatar

so to be clear: it’s not browser related. Don’t change anything on your blog, your pictures aren’t gone. They are just not visible to people on newer devices.

my ticket for this forum support is here. But no news there.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks snorrepot for confirming the problem and creating the ticket. I visited you blog and it’s the same here.

I made a short video demo about it. You can see at runtime 0:13 how you can get the images back on iPhone 6 (iOS 8.3) on reloading the page in vertical orientation (portrait) as WP user akimel found out:

Very strange. Very, very strange! Good look, WP.com staff, on ironing out that bug!

An update about my problem: I have been suing Chrome for a couple of years now, and because of my poor eyesight I have had it configured to display the page bigger. That, apparently, is what has started to make the pics disappear.

After reinstalling Chrome, everything worked fine. I then went into Preferences and configured Chrome to enlargen the display (175%). When I went back to my blog, the pics disappeared. I then turned off the zoom and the pics reappeared.

Here it seems that the problem is solved. All pictures are showing up in all Safaris on all devices.

Thx, WP.com staff! (What was the reason btw?)

Apologies for the recent issues with images.

Some code changes were made on April 15th and 17th to help responsive images in mobile and high-resolution displays. Some unintended errors occurred, but the code was removed for further testing on April 17th.
