Problem with responsive editing between desktop view and mobile view

I am trying to get my edited website that is viewable on desktop to look right on a mobile. The problem I’m having is that columns that are side by side on desktop view stack vertically on mobile view. If I try to alter that in mobile view it completely upsets the desktop view throwing everything out of kilter. I understand that modifications to the mobile view are not supposed to affect the desktop view but that is not happening. For instance I have a number of images of items for sale with name titles beneath and then PayPal buttons beneath them. They are positioned side by side across the desktop view four abreast. When I look at mobile view they are all stacked vertically four images then four texts and then four buttons so nothing relates to where they are supposed to be. There does not seem to be any way of re-ordering them without messing up the desktop view. What am I doing wrong?

  • Hi there!

Do you have a site link so we can take a closer look at the functionality there?

Your site at WordPress.com doesn’t seem to have the images you are referring to.

Bear in mind that if your site is hosted with another company than WordPress.com, it means that you use the open-source variant of the WordPress platform (which functions differently than what we offer here on WordPress.com) and help is available at the community forums here:

Thank you for replying. I have now solved the problem I was having. I do have another, though, if you could advise. In mobile and tablet mode the submenu dropdown has an arrow at the right side of the menu bar that needs to be clicked to open up the submenu items. However, this is not visible against the background so that you do not know it is there unless you hit it by accident. I have tried to change the colour so it is visible but cannot find any control to allow me to do so. My website is http://www.andrewdandridge.co.uk . The relevant menu items are Paintings gallery 1 and Limited edition prints 1. How do I make those arrows visible.

  • Hi there, @andrewdandridge!

The site you are having this issue with, https://www.andrewdandridge.co.uk/, is not actually hosted here with us at WordPress.com. Instead, this site is a self-hosted WordPress site. This is different than WordPress.com. WordPress.com is a managed host for WordPress sites.

We can only offer support for sites hosted here with us at WordPress.com.

As some general advice here, I see you are using the theme Astra. It looks like they have color settings for the submenu that you can change by following this:
