Problem with Site Indexing and Domain Name
-
Hi,
Our site is not showing up in google very easily. when you type in hornbyeducation.com it does show up, but says underneath “A description for this result is not available because of this site’s robots.txt – learn more.”
There is someone willing to help me who knows more about indexing of sites. They suggested i ask the following:
“1.- how can I change my main domain from hornbyeducation.com to http://www.hornbyeducation.com?
2.- the sitemaps seems to be only for mobile sites, and in google my site has only indexed the homepage. I think this might be because of the sitemap. Is there any problem with that? The help forum of my theme gave the following advice, suggesting that wordpress.com forum may be able to offer more help:
WordPress.com comes with SEO automatically setup for your site. You can find a lot of useful information here: https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/seo-on-wordpress-com/. As you can see, they do create the sitemap automatically so if there is an issue with that it wouldn’t be something theme related but something for WordPress.com staff directly.
I did notice that your site competes with a lot of other sites using the name Hornby which have higher Google rankings, so this is one of the reasons why it’s not displaying at the top. It’s also only been published a month ago, so it will take some time for it to climb up as you publish posts and follow the instructions on the SEO page shared above.
To change your domain you should be able to do so under the ‘Domain’ area of your settings. However, it may be that WP.com forces the domain as is for some specific reason. You can try to update it, but if you have any other questions regarding this it can be directed to WP.com’s support threads directly.
Can anyone assist with what is going on here?
And regarding the final part, are they correct that I can change from http:/hornbyeducation.com to http://www.hornbyeducation.com ?
The last site i purchased said www….i’m not sure what i did different on this one! Thanks.

“1.- how can I change my main domain from hornbyeducation.com to http://www.hornbyeducation.com?
You can’t. WordPress software strips out the redundant www.
www is an old protocol from back when everything was under separate server hardware. www (www.example.com) was the web server, mail (mail.example.com) was the mail server, ftp (ftp.example.com) was the FTP server, print (print.example.com) was the print server, etc. These days, everything is run under the web server, making www. redundant and a waste of four characters.

That’s not correct. See here https://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/#xml-sitemaps-for-search-engines

I do not have the time or inclination to scroll through these 268 themes https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-layout/ to find out if your Organization theme is a responsive layout theme or not.
A responsive layout theme adapts to different screen sizes so that your website will work (and be optimized for) iPhones, iPads, Android and other mobile devices. When responsive width themes are viewed on mobiles sidebars appear below the posts in order to provide as much space as possible for reading.
The mobile theme is a completely different theme. When we use a responsive theme we disable the mobile theme. Go to > Appearance > Mobile and disable the mobile theme.

When it comes to attracting search engine attention that is done through the frequent publication of Posts, not Pages. Search engine could care less about Pages. Pages are for static content and they do not have RSS Feeds.

Thanks very much for those explanations.
What did you think about the part where google is saying: “A description for this result is not available because of this site’s robots.txt – learn more.”” ?
Is this because I only made my site public 2 weeks ago, and Google just needs to catch up.
-
It’s my call that is because you chose to make the site private while setting up and that is exactly why I never do that when I register a new blog. It will take the publication of many new Posts to drive that search result down in the SERPs (search engine page results). https://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/
That said, I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up re: the robot txt.

Thanks for the assistance.
The blog seeking help for that has the message “A description for this result is not available because of this site’s robots.txt” when we look up “hornbyeducation.com” in google is this one. (My last comment was under another username).

I already saw that here in Google search site:hornbyeducation.com/
And I already tagged this thread for a Staff follow up re: the robot.txt. Please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it. -
Since your site is a newer site it may take a while for Google to catch up. It can take 4-6 weeks before Google will index your site. You’ll find you’ll site’s robots.txt file here:
http://hornbyeducation.com/robots.txtI also notice that your site is coming up as “www.hornbyeducation.com” in search results. My guess is that you’ve changed your site address to remove the
wwwat some point. I would recommend setting up Google Search Console (formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools) to let Google know that you want you site to be http:// and not http://www You’ll find more on that here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/#google-webmaster-toolsYou can also submit your site to Google and request it be indexed sooner at this URL:
http://www.google.com/submityourcontent/As a sidenote, your theme, Organization is responsive and mobile ready.
I do not have the time or inclination to scroll through these 268 themes https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-layout/ to find out if your Organization theme is a responsive layout theme or not.
One option to quickly check if a theme is responsive is to open the site or theme demo and resize your browser window. This will let you know if the theme is responsive. For example in this case you can search for “Organization” then open the demo and resize it.
Would it be possible for someone on the Themes Team to please enter the feature “responsive layout” on the detailed theme description pages of the relevant themes, in the right hand column along with the other features?
I’ll take a look at this, one thing to note is that we are no longer accepting/adding themes that are not responsive. A better way to go about it may be to tag older themes “fixed” and the absence of the tag means the theme is responsive.
