Problem With Tags
-
When I make a new post some of the tags don’t seem to work. For example If I tag a post with SEO and Google when I click on the tags I will see my post included amongst other posts on the SEO tag page, but my posts never appear on the Google Tag page.
-
Hmm, he or she is right. This post appears on the SEO list but not the Google list. I had thought that maybe is was because the posts come hot and heavy on those lists but the post was only three hours ago (at this writing) and would still be included.
Hmmm…
Doesn’t show up on the Off Page Factors (Whatever that is) tag page either.
I wonder if there’s a limit to how may tags a single post can be assigned. I know Mark has mentioned finding posts tagged dozens of times in the past. (Like 40-50 tags per post)

This could well be related to the system maintenance we have had. If this still happens in a few days, let us know.

And for future reference – NOT applicable to this blog – there is no limit to the number of tags you can use on a post. The system will let you add dozens. And that is tag spamming – which is thought of really really badly. It might even lose a blog. As for when that limit is hit – it depends. A blog that has one post with a lot of tags is probably okay. A blog which has a lot of tags for every single post is probably doomed.
-
And on another note – the average number of posts made is ~59,000 a day. So some digging may well be in order for some tags, esp the more popular ones. (Again, not related to the above)

I have the same problem.
I have published a couple of posts about an hour ago, and they do not appear yet on the global tag pages.
Is that a normal delay or something?
It was working fine on a previous post, 8-10 hours ago.

Decoding – I believe that the tags (just like a variety of other stats type things) are cached and only updated every so often. I have to admit I don’t know the frequency and if it actually applies to the tag surfer.
The other thing that you might be hitting is that if you’re logged in you didn’t used to be able to see your own posts in the tag surfer. The thinking was that you know what you posts say, you don’t need to see them. I don’t know if this is still the case.

Collin, you are right about the update frequency, it does not seem to be instant or constant.
I didn’t mean the tag surfer, I was talking about the global tags. For example http://wordpress.com/tag/software/.My latest posts now appear on the global tag pages, however it took about 3 hours for the update. It usually takes 5-30 mins, that’s why I thought that there might be a problem.

Ah, I see, thanks for the clarification.
It’s possible there’s a problem, but like you I’m just a mere mortal.

I have a category on my blog which says ‘Phhotographs’ – I managed to upload 2 onto my blog. For reasons entirely unknown to me I pressed Tag Surfer. Now when I press Photographs I seem to have thousands of other people’s photographs. I don’t want them but have no idea how to get rid of them. Does anyone else have an idea?
-
1) Do you mean Tag Surfer takes you to other people’s posts tagged “Photographs?” That’s exactly what it’s supposed to do.
2) Do you mean that you somehow uploaded THEIR photos to your blog? That’s weird.
3) Do you mean that when you hit the Photographs tag you get a page with all kinds of other people’s posts on photographs? That’s because you’re hitting the global tag, which is the one on your post, rather than the local tag, which is the one in the sidebar. It’s bass-ackwards if you ask me, but this is the way WordPress has it set up. If you want to surf only YOUR posts about Photographs, click on the category in your sidebar. If you want to look at what everyone else has done under that tag, hit the tag right on the post.Does this help?

If you are talking about your “tag surfer” and that’s where these photos are being displayed (it’s hard to tell) then you can remove the urls of the blogs from which the photos are coming from your tag surfer list by clicking on the little X next to the url.
