problem with the facebook and twitter buttons on my blog

    Hello,
I’ve got a problem with the facebook and twitter buttons on my blog.
Until October everything was working fine. When someone liked a post on FB, you saw it appear on my blog, same with Twitter.
In October suddenly all the previous FB likes from all posts disappeared on my blog. You just see 0 everywhere. Twitter shares remained. So, all my old posts have 0 FB likes, and the normal twitter likes.
Then I posted again in December, the FB likes appeared on the blog, but the Twitter shares do no longer appear now. My last 3 posts have FB likes, I hope they will remain.

Maybe you should just scroll through my blog, and see for yourself.

Could you please help me get these ‘likes’ back? :)
They are still visible on FB, but it’s nice to see the appreciation as well on the blog itself.

I didn’t change anything, didn’t switch themes or anything. So I don’t really get it.

    Best regards,
    Cat

    Hi Cat,

In October/November of last year we started serving all our free sites over https instead of http. You’ll notice if you visit http://cattekop.wordpress.com/ , it just redirects to https://cattekop.wordpress.com/. This helps with everyone’s site security, as well as your reader’s security.

But that change caused some issues with sharing buttons. Facebook’s Like button tool won’t count and display shares from the http and https version at the same time; they may as well be two completely different sites.

We attempt to compensate for this by adding the share counts from both the http and https sites, then add them together. But what this doesn’t account for are any Shortlinks pointing to the old http site. It looks like that’s how most of your older posts got shared, so a lot of those old counts are now gone.

Share counts should remain functional on the posts going forward, but sadly we don’t have a way to get the old share counts back.

    Hi Alex,
    Thank you for your reply.
What I don’t understand: why isn’t there a problem with other WordPress accounts? The people I follow (also https now) don’t seem to have this problem… So (why) is it only me?
And why are there no counts for Twitter since October/November?

If your friends had fewer shares using shortlinks, and more with the standard URLS, we were able to compensate for more of their shares. This actually affects every user across WordPress.com, unfortunately. Just in some cases our current fixes were able to remedy it better.

The same problem exists with Twitter. We try to ask for all shares from the HTTP and HTTPS versions of the URL, then add them together. But looking at your most recent articles, Twitter is showing no shares for either version. Here are screenshots from the December 4 article, and it’s the same on the more recent as well:

I’m sorry I can’t do more here. I promise we’re looking for better long-term systems with both Facebook and Twitter and hopefully those developments will results in fixes to the past as well, but right now I don’t have a full solution.
