Problems adding users!

I’m at my wit’s end and am hoping some brilliant person out there will help me.
I’ve created a blog related to the course I’m teaching and I need to add my students as authors so they can post on our blog. I’m familiar with WordPress so I thought this would be no problem. I told my students to sign up for and activate WordPress accounts, which they’ve done. I have followed the directions for adding users from the help page: http://support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
I was able to add one student as an author but no one else. Everytime I try to add a user I get a message saying “that email does not belong to any person here.” What’s going on?? When someone is a user do they have to subscribe to the blog or do something else that would indicate they want to be an author/contributer/etc on a particular blog? If so, what is it?

Double check with the students and make sure they have given you the correct email addresses they used to sign up for the wordpress account.
They do not have to have a blog, only an account here.
