Problems after clearing Firefox cache and history
-
I cleared my Firefox history and cache today, and my login to WordPress has been acting weird ever since.
The notifications dropdown drops down a blank box with a “wait spinner” and never fills in. (In Chrome, no problem, so I know the problem is Firefox.)
When I go to blogs I follow, there is no bar across the top recognizing me as having logged into WP, let alone as following that blog.
I’ve tried re-clearing the cache and history several times, logging out and logging back in… no change.
Anyone have any other ideas I can try?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just a guess: the browser could be corrupted. You might try resetting Firefox, or deleting it and uploading another FF 39.0. Alternatively, test to see whether disabling FF add-ons helps.

…or deleting it and uploading another FF 39.0.
Correction: I meant uninstalling and reinstalling another FF.

I’ll try disabling add-ons, but I’ll hold off on re-installing FF unless absolutely necessary. I wonder if this is relevant:
logosconcarne.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.wordpress.com, wordpress.com (Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)This is the error I get if I use https rather than http to access my site. Seems like the security cert should include my purchased domain, shouldn’t it?
Using FF debug to investigate the notifications dropdown failing to populate, I see a security error.
-
I’m beginning to think this is a configuration issue on the WP side. Both FF and Chrome give security cert errors if I access:
https://logosconcarne.com/
But not:
https://logosconcarne.wordpress.com/
However accessing the latter redirects to:
http://logosconcarne.com/
Which is fine, except that my own blog site doesn’t show me as logged in (treats me like a visitor). Switching to the admin console is fine (using https), but somehow WP doesn’t see me as logged in when visting actual blogs.

I’m unable to properly address the issue(s) that you report, and so I”ve tagged the topic for staff attention. Please wait for a staff member to respond.

Hi Wyrd,
Due to the way SSL Certificates work (what allows a site to be seen over https) we are currently unable to support https with custom domains such as https://logosconcarne.com.
Our certificate allows for https for any domain or subdomain on wordpress.com. This is why we redirect your WordPress.com subdomain to the http version of your site instead of using https. The only way a user should be getting to the https version (and the scary warning page in Chrome) is by manually typing the “s”
If you’re able to get to your custom URL with https manually let us know the steps you took and we can take a look.
Also, if you’re still having other (not the https) issues with Firefox will you try starting it in safe mode?

@musicdoc1: Thanks!
@bdukes: Okay, that explains the behavior regarding the redirect. What it doesn’t explain at all is the primary problem I’m having that seems to have started when I cleared FF’s cache, cookies, and history.
(1) The notifications drop down stays spinning, waiting, blank.
(2) Being logged in to my admin console is no longer translating to WP recognizing I’m logged in on my blog posts/pages or anyone else’s blog posts/pages. There’s no WP bar across the top.
I’ll try the safe mode. Disabling plug-ins didn’t change anything.
Thanks!

No change using FF in safe mode.
Here’s what might be a huge (hopefully helpful) clue: If I’m logged into my admin console…
Going to a WP blog with a wordpress.com domain name works as expected. The WP bar is across the top, and I’m seen by that blog as a logged in WP user.
Going to a WP blog with a personal domain (including my own) shows the problem mentioned in (2) above. It’s as if I’m any stranger who just showed up.
-
Here’s another clue: Even on a wordpress.com blog that shows me as logged in (and allows me to comment) the Like button doesn’t work. I get a quick (blank) popup from FF that vanishes almost instantly, but my Like click doesn’t add a Like to the post.
(In Chrome, no problem.)

It sounds like it could be a problem with Firefox not accepting cookies. Are you having trouble with other services which require cookies?
-
BOOM! (Goes the dynamite!)
That was the problem. I’d set FF to stop accepting third party cookies (wanting to reduce how advertising tracks me).
I changed it to accept those cookies “From Visited” and now the notifications dropdown works and so does visiting other blogs!
THANK YOU! You’re a Happiness Engineer for sure in these parts!:D
“I’m back, baby!”

@ wyrdsmythe,
Glad that you seem to have resolved the issue, but I’m not convinced that the FF third-party cookies setting was the cause. I normally leave my FF cookies setting on “Accept third-party cookies: Never.” And yet the notifications drop-down list works properly, the “WP bar” appears and functions as it should, and I’ve no issues with using Like buttons or commenting on other blogs.

@musicdoc1:
Changing that one setting instantly brought everything back (and it’s been fine ever since), so at least in my case it sure seems to have fixed the problem. I can imagine there could be some combination of factors involved that the change somehow changed enough to matter.
Is it possible you have the necessary cookies already stored before you stopped accepting 3rd party cookies?
It all started when I decided to do some housecleaning… cleared out a bunch of what I saw as irrelevant cookies (lots from ads sites) plus my cache and older history. But then I cleared FF to the bone once the problems started, so that should have eliminated “partial configuration” issues. Plus safe mode, no change.
Change the cookie setting, all good again.

What would be wonderful is someone really knowledgeable about how the software functions coming along and explaining exactly what’s going on.

I don’t think so. I clear all my cookies frequently.

Agreed.
