Problems assigning a home page

    Hello,

I have set up a WordPress site at http://mimircommunications.wordpress.com, but I am having problems setting the homepage to the one I want to display. I have tried changing the page order sequence and slugs but to no avail and keep going round in circles. The system seems fixed on the home page displaying the news page but I want it to be the page that is currently at http://mimircommunications.com/home/

I am not sure whether there is something that can be done server side to fix this or whether it would be better to delete what’s there and start again? I think I need your help for the latter anyway? Ideally the sequence I want is:

Home (to be the home page and display the text that currently appears in http://mimircommunications.com/home/
    About
    News (to display blogs)
    Mimir
    Contact

Are you able to help me?

    Kind regards,

    Mark Pillans

  • You can set your desired home page at Settings -> Reading in your blog’s Dashboard.

Many thanks for your reply, however I have already tried that which is why I have contacted you. My desired home page when set in Settings -> Reading is not showing correctly.

I made some changed to your Reading Settings, and Menus. It should be good now.

Many thanks for this, but this is now probably more clearly highlighting my problem. Now my blog posts are not being displayed on my ‘news’ page and the information I want displayed on my ‘home’ page is appearing on my ‘news’ page. I cannot work out how to remedy this and I am wondering whether to just delete the pages I have and start again?

  • Specifically, what do you want to see at News vs. Home?

Currently, News is set to display your blog posts, and Home is actually blank.

Thank you for getting back to me. The text that is currently visible on the ‘news’ page is not a blog post. The visible text is what I would like to appear on my ‘home’ page and is created from widgets in the Minimum theme settings. My blog post (although assigned to the ‘news’ page is actually not visible at all. Is the problem in the application of the Minimum theme? Somehow it is seems to be assigning detail to the news page which I want assigned to the (currently blank) home page and I cannot work out how to fix this.

  • Ok, what you’ll want to do is this:

    1. Copy the content from the News page to the Home page.

    2. Make the News page blank.

Then, it should work out as desired.

Thanks, but I don’t think that you have looked at the pages before answering me. There is no actual text in the edit page for ‘News’ – it is (and was) empty. But the text I want to display in the home page which is generated by the widgets set in the ‘widgets’ section displays in the live news page.

This is why I need help, but we don’t seem to be getting anywhere.

There seems to be a problem with the theme assignation of the home page attributes which are locked on to the news page which in turn are masking the posts which should display in that page.

If you can’t help me then please delete my pages so I can at least try starting from scratch before I give up. I have been trying to make this work for over two weeks now and if I hadn’t spent 75 dollars on the Minimum theme I would have left WordPress long ago.

  • Sorry for the trouble with this.

At this point, I recommend deleting the page from the Pages section of your Dashboard (don’t forget to empty the Trash section) and try creating them again.

That’s finally done the trick! Thanks for sticking with me. It seems that the first page that was created was still assigned as the home page by the theme, despite the site having a different home page. How frustrating, but I am pleased this has been resolved.
