Problems between WordPress and Master Cook
-
A reader is telling me today that she used to be able to download recipes from my blog to her MasterCook recipe organizing software just fine before December. But all of a sudden, sometime shortly before Christmas, she thinks in early December, she no longer can. She’s convinced it’s some change on my blog causing this. I suggested an uninstall/reinstall of MasterCook to rule out a corrupted file at her end, but that went over like lead balloons. All I’ve changed on my blog lately is I added a holiday Christmas banner photo (since removed) AND I turned off the extra security HTTPS feature in my account settings, since it was messing up all my posted links over at Facebook, where I share my recipes. Any thoughts I might share with her on this software conflict?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.COM is in the process of changing all addresses over to https – it’s more secure and Google is starting to downgrade sites that do not support https – there have been some problems in the changeover. Perhaps that change is at the crux of this issue your reader is reporting. I tagged this thread for a Staff response and assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. Thank you for your prompt reply. I’m subscribed. I’ll sit tight and await the staff reply.

Hi buttoni,
The move over to HTTPS is what’s blocking the MasterCook webclipper. The bookmarklet is being viewed as an unsafe script and so the popup window the tool uses isn’t popping up.
The user should be able to override the block so the script will work again, but the process for doing so is different in different browsers.
Do you know what browser (including version number if possible) she’s using?

I’m trying to find out that information for you. The user email address she provided is bad as her server’s mail daemon bounced it back to me saying for “lack of yahoo.com account”. So I’m querying her via blog “reply” and hope she sees it. Will post back as soon as she replies to me. Sorry about the delay. I appreciate your attention thus far.

Hey, looks like she’s alert and saw my post promptly. Looks like Jan is using FX.
Jan 39m: I’m using Firefox 34.0.5 — thanks again for helping.
I look forward to your workaround for her, Liz. Thanks so much. :)

Cool. Here’s what she needs to do.
1) Go to the recipe page for the recipe she wants.
2) Click the “add to master cook” button in her bookmark bar.
3) It will look like nothing happened, but a small grey shield will have appeared in the address bar on the far right side. She should click that and choose “run unsafe scripts”*
4) After that she can click the “add to master cook” button again and it should work like before.*Note: In this very limited case, this process is probably safe, assuming you both trust Master Cook as a company. That having been said, it’s not a great idea to choose to unblock unsafe scripts unless you are absolutely sure what the script does (in this case allows the master cook pop up window) and they are coming from a trusted site.

Thanks so much, LizTheFair. Love your name there. :) I’ll give this info to her. Sounds like an easy workaround for her. and thanks for the security caveat. She needs to be aware of that also, as an everpresent internet security issue. :) Once again you WordPress troubleshooters have come to my rescue. You are greatly appreciated. Hope you and yours have a very and prosperous HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

OK, my user tried the steps and it still not working:
(copy/pasted)
Thanks Peggy. I tried this, but it still doesn’t work. There were a couple SLIGHT differences in wording, but I don’t expect that matters.
1. The shield is on the extreme left, before the URL, not on the right
2. Clicking the shield shows a window “Insecure Content”. Clicking the Options shows: “Disable protection for now”. When I clicked that option, a red slash appeared over the grey shield, but when I tried “add to MasterCook”, nothing happened. Sigh.Any other things she might try?

Is there any chance you get your reader to try different browser? Firefox is aggressively blocking the pop-up and I haven’t been able to find a reliable work around. The instructions I provided before should work in Chrome.

I’ll let her know that is probably her only option right now. Thank you so much for replying so quickly, Liz. Have a great day!

Hi buttoni,
I found a firefox add on that solves your users problem. The first step is to install this browser extension.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/toggle-mixed-active-content/?src=ss
Once it’s on, she’ll activate it by clicking the A in a green box that will show up on the right side of her screen. When she does that the box will turn red.
When the box is read, the bookmarklet will work again.
Do remind her to only turn the bookmarklet on (to red) when she needs to.

Thanks so much for your persistence with this issue, Liz. Really appreciate it and it says a lot about the help team there. I passed along your info to my reader just now. Hopefully this will work for her and thanks for getting back with me on it!

It was my pleasure. Thanks for your patience while I worked it out.
Let me know how it goes for your reader.

Here’s my reader’s reply, Liz:
YESSSSSSSS!
It worked!!!!! Happy-happy- joy-joy!!!!!!
Thank you so much, and big thanks as well to Liz at WordPress for her extraordinary customer support. Just so I have this right, I turn the green “A” to red and then immediately click it back to green as soon as I capture one of your recipes, right? Not something I would leave open/red except for this one task.
Thanks again — I SO appreciate your tenacity on this one! :-D–Jan
So I think we’re a go now, Liz. You’ve been a doll to find a solution for her. Thanks again for all your help. :)

Wonderful!! I’m so glad we were able to work this out :)

That’s exactly right. She wants to keep it “locked” which is green (a little confusing, but whatever” except when she’s specifically trying to get a recipe.
