Problems Commenting on Some WordPress Blogs
-
I have a WordPress.com account. My husband (David) also has a WordPress.com account. Both were set up using this computer.
I am signed into my WordPress.com account. Whenever I try to make a comment on some blogs, it says that I am trying to comment as David, but that I can’t because I am not signed into his account. But, I am NOT trying to comment as David. I am trying to comment as me (Suzanne), that is why I am signed into my own account.
Could you please help me to fix this problem? Thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do you each have your own username accounts?
Are you using the same email address?Every WordPress.COM blog has a sole owner. It is the person with the WordPress.COM username account who registered the blog under that username account and a single associated email address, and who is the original Admin of the blogs registered under that username account. You can create one gravatar for every username account that applies to all blogs registered under the same username account and email address.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-address/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-notifications/There is a single email address that can be used on only one wordpress.COM username account and not on any others, regardless of how many blogs are registered under that username account.
The wordpress.COM blog’s owner can change the relevant email address on their accounts page at https://wordpress.com/me/account at any time.

Thank you for responding. We have two completely separate WordPress.com accounts. Mine uses my e-mail address, user name, etc. His uses his e-mail address, user name, etc. Both of our e-mail addresses are Gmail, but two completely separate e-mail accounts, too. The only thing in common is that both accounts were created on this computer.
When I set up his account, I didn’t know anything about the Gravatar thing, so is that perhaps where the glitch is? Do I need to do something there to separate us?
Thank you.

PS What is really confusing is that this doesn’t happen on every blog that I try to respond to. I am having no trouble responding to the comments that come through my notification screen. The problem happens when I am directly on another blog trying to comment, but it doesn’t happen on every blog. If it happened on all of them that I tried to comment on directly, it wouldn’t be so confusing or frustrating. It is like it is randomly choosing which ones to allow me to comment on as myself, when I’ve never had this problem before.

Go to this page https://wordpress.com/me/account
Enter your primary site (which will be linked to your username) and it’s web address there. Then click Save account settings. -
In that screen, everything has the correct information filled in: username, primary site name, URL, the email address. None of my husband’s information is there as secondary or anything like that. The “save” button is grayed out and won’t let me click it.
David checked his Gravatar account on his own computer and it only shows his information, just as mine only shows my information. Everywhere I check, there is nothing connecting our accounts, yet something has us crossed somewhere.

Hi there,
What could be happening here is that when you log out of your husband’s account, the cookies tracking his login isn’t being deleted properly. So when you try to comment the website checks the cookies in your browser, which tells the website your husband’s account is still logged in.
Can you open an incognito window in Chrome, or a private window in Firefox, then log into your account and check if this still happens. If not, that will confirm my theory, in which case you’ll need to make sure to clear your browser cookies after logging out of one account and before logging into the other.
One option that might work here is to set up separate user profiles in your browser. Then you can each log into your accounts under your own profiles. That way your browser will store the cookies for your login under your profile, and for your husband’s login under his profile, which should prevent this problem.
The instructions for doing this in Firefox are here:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
And for Chrome:

Thank you for your help. I opened a private window in Firefox and was able to comment on the blog without a problem. My comment went right through.
Another problem in the original browser is happening now, though. I am having to moderate my own comments if I comment back to people directly on the blog post. But, if I do it from the notification window, I don’t have to. If I comment directly on my blog, my name comes across as my full name. If I comment from the notification window, it comes across with my username. These issues just started today. How do I correct these inconsistencies?
Thank you for helping me with the cookie issue!
-
This second issue is also cookie related. It sounds like now your browser isn’t tracking your login when you look at the site itself.
When clearing cookies, did you perhaps disable third-party cookies? That would cause the issue you’re describing. If you have a browser-extension that blocks cookies that could also be the cause.
Please try clearing cookies again, but at the same time make sure cookies are enabled in your browser. Then log into your account in a regular window, not incognito/private, and check if this is still a problem.
-
Thank you. I don’t know if I disabled anything when I was clearing cookies or not. I didn’t do any disabling intentionally, anyway. This is the part of computers that I don’t understand and am always afraid I will mess something up.
I will try to figure out what browser extensions this thing has and make sure that cookies are enabled.
Thank you. Have a blessed weekend.

You can find instructions for making sure you have third party cookies enabled here:

I think the simplest option on a shared computer might be that you and your husband use different browsers – one on Chrome and one on Firefox – for WordPress.com. That way you can each log into your own account and you won’t need to continually log out and back in again. That should prevent this problem from recurring.
-
Thank you. I think that is probably the easiest solution to this, too. Have a blessed day and thank you for your help.
