Problems Creating a Custom Menu
-
I have read all the info and watched the videos on how to create a custom menu but I am still have problems making any progress at all. When I go to the option of “custom menu” and I see the drop down boxes, there is nothing I can pull from the left side to populate the custom menu. I am trying to create a custom navigation bar but no where does it state that I have to create the pages first. Is that the case? For example, how can I get/set the home page? All I’ve been able to add is a link to my website under the links drop down. I want to create a home page, an about page, and perhaps a few others. I have the same question for setting up categories. Do I have to write and categorize the pages first? I do wish there was something in the knowledge base that told me this. My blog is “colorformtexture.wordpress.com” and the theme I am currently using is “Quintus”.
Thanks.

Howdy!

Yes, this is correct. You need to create some Pages or Posts by going to Pages -> Add New or Posts -> Add New before you will see them in the Custom Menu area. Read more about Pages and Posts (and the differences) here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/To add your Home page to your Custom Menu, you can add a Custom Link that points to your blog address (http://colorformtexture.wordpress.com/):
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-linksCategories are only used for Posts — so you could create some new Posts, categorize them, and then you would see those categories appear in the Custom Menus area. You can read more about Categories here:

Hi, Caroline. Thanks for your response. So I understand better now about categories and pages vs posts.
However, I am still confused about getting adding a home page. So let me rephrase my issue. I want a blog that has a navigation bar (ideally either above or below the header) that would include the links for this specific blog, such as “home”; “about” and perhaps one or two others. In the section that you referred me to regarding “adding custom links”, it starts out asking “Want a menu tab to link directly to another website?”. That is not what I am trying to do. I want the reader to be able to navigate back to the home blog page from other pages in the blog – not specifically to go outside my blog to some other website. The help wording is most confusing…so I do need some more direction here.

Hi Mary!
You can add a Custom Link to your menu that points to your blog address — http://colorformtexture.wordpress.com/ — and title it “Home”. Custom Links don’t necessarily have to be to an external website.
I hope this clears things up!
Cheers,
Caroline
