Problems editing existing file

Il can’t seem to be able to edit My existing files, when I log on as site administer no files to edit appear only to view on site without editing. There is a message saying a new version of wordpress is available for upgrade. But, the last time my site was upgrading by somebody at start logic, the shop site directories and programs were destroyed. So, I would rather not upgrade but just use existing version and edit files from dashboard of administrator. Is this still possible. If not, why not? You are hurting a lot of people by doing this. please reply email to (email visible only to moderators and staff) or give me a phone number so I can discuss this important issue with you.

To elaborate more, I had an awful experience last year on letting start logic do the wordpress update for my website. They lost all my bookselling directories on shop site at the same time the wordpress update was done, but refused to take responsibility as to who did it and rectifying the situation. now, someone, I think you has again installed a wordpress update but stopped short of finishing it in order that the user can edit existing files using the new software. This leaves us with no way to manage the software from our website except signing up to wordpress.com to trust you to do it all. Why should I trust you on this? I am very suspicious that the problem is that your software does not handle installing new versions on websites managed from that website without losing existing files, that you all are aware of this, and are going ahead with creating new versions that the old won’t work with in order not to honor existing promises about how the software works. I have seen this before, and it is diabolical and very reprehensible.

  • Hi @andrewwharrell, I’m sorry you had a rough experience. When you’re running updates, it’s a good idea to be sure you get a backup first so you can revert if you run into any problems.

Most of the time, if you’re keeping everything up to date, you’ll be just fine. And it is important to keep your site and plugins and themes updated so that they’ll be secure.

I do want to clarify one thing. WordPress.com is our managed hosting service. We provide SSL WordPress hosting, as well as security, maintenance, and support. And stability, of course.

WordPress itself is free code, created by its own community. If you’re using your own copy with another host, you are likely in charge of handling your own backups, maintenance, etc. WordPress.com isn’t connected to your site at all. You can move your site here if you want to, so that we can manage updates and what not for you, but you definitely don’t have to.

If you want to use an older version of the free software, you can, however you’ll still want to apply security patches and what not. If you’re not comfortable doing that on your own, I’d recommend hiring someone to help, and there are companies that do that kind of thing for people. Or you’d be welcome to move your site to our services, so we can just take care of all updates for you. We would be using the latest version, though, and again those come from the WordPress community.

As for why folks update WordPress at all, if you’d like you can follow along with the conversations at Make and Github. There are many, many conversations on how to make WordPress better: bug reports, pain points, feature requests, security notes, and so on. And typically the update process goes pretty smoothly. Just be sure you have backups first and feel comfortable with troubleshooting, and you’ll be fine. Or again, you’re welcome to host with us. We have more info on the differences between self managed WordPress and our services here:
    https://get.wp.com

If you do want to move your site here so we can manage it, let us know. Or if you want to continue managing your own copy, just be sure you’ve got regular backups (Jetpack works well for this), and use the community forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ if you need any tips.
