problems editing old theme

  • Unknown's avatar

This site was set up for me years ago using the Lorencia theme. I find this is completely outdated and when I go to edit a page, it is either in CLASSIC or BLOCK editor and does not even show the content on my page so it’s impossible for me to edit it. Some of my other sites use ‘thrive architech’ and I find this far more easier to edit. So my question is? How do you recommend I edit this site without re-doing the whole site in a new theme? Can I add a plug-in that will allow for more user-friendly editing?

    Hi there!

Can you share the address of the site you’re referring to?

    Thanks!

Do I need to change the theme?

    thanks,
    Rita

  • Hello Rita,

It looks like this is a self-hosted site, so we can’t offer support with how this site is built.

If you’re not familiar with the theme and was set up some time ago, you may wish to start a fresh with something you can learn and work yourself.

What’s your site about? You could perhaps spin up a free site on WordPress.com and test the waters with something new.

    Hi thank for your reply.

I’m open to changing the theme but I don’t have time to make a whole new site. AND, most of the existing content is still good.

Can I pick a new theme and then copy/paste my old content onto the new theme site?

Also, how do I “re-direct” my URL to point to the new site once completed?

    thanks,
    Rita

  • Hello Rita,

Can I pick a new theme and then copy/paste my old content onto the new theme site?

Absolutely you can, and that for cuts down the work load.

We have predefined patterns that can also speed things up: https://wordpress.com/support/block-pattern/

Also, how do I “re-direct” my URL to point to the new site once completed?

You can connect the domain as per: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

I uploaded the WordPress Editor plugin but I can’t find it when I’m trying to edit my pages.

Where do I access it on my dashboard?

    thanks,
    rita

  • Hi Rita! If you’ve uploaded an editor plugin, that also changes how WordPress works by default, so can you refer to the plugin’s documentation?

Going forward, you’ll want to use the correct forum for self-managed WordPress installations:
    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Your individual copy of WordPress is highly customizable, and what we run here is customized in other ways, so there are differences between the two.

ok i’m getting a little overwhelmed here with all the links and direction I’m getting. Here’s my problem…

    1. My “lorencia” site is outdated and does not let me edit properly anymore.
    2. I want to use a newer, fresher looking theme from wordpress (free)
    3. QUESTION? Can I create pages using a new theme and then once i’m done, delete the old pages from the old theme?
    4. Will doing this, break or damage my existing site?
    5. If it’s ok to use a new theme on new pages, can I choose a free one from the “customize”, “theme” section?
    6. And, will this new theme have the wordpress block editor option.

sorry for all the questions, I just need to understand this completely.
    thank you for your patience,
    Rita

    Hi there!

Please note that your site uses the WordPress.org software, not WordPress.com that we provide support for on this forum.

There are some differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. If you aren’t sure about them, please check the following page that explains it well: WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.

We’re happy to point you in the right direction, but because your site uses the WordPress.org software, the best place to ask for help is the WordPress.org support forum at https://wordpress.org/support/forums

Generally speaking, all content carries over when you install a new theme. So all of your existing pages should work even with a new theme. But if you want, you can absolutely create new pages after installing a new theme and delete the old (existing) pages. This shouldn’t break your site.

You can install a free theme from your site’s wp-admin dashboard → Appearance → Themes → Add New. Most new themes will work with the block editor. But if you want to be sure that the theme you are installing will work 100% with the block editor, you can check out our theme gallery at https://wordpress.com/themes and download free themes if you want. All our recent themes work fully with the block editor.

To download a free theme from our theme gallery, you can click the name of the theme to visit the theme showcase page and scroll to the bottom to click the “Download” button. Once the zip file is downloaded to your computer, you can upload it to your WordPress.org site to install and activate the theme.

If you have more questions, please post on the WordPress.org support forum: https://wordpress.org/support/forums

    Regards
