problems importing from one wp blog to another wp blog

  I have 2 wordpress.com blogs. I am trying to merge the content from one to the other. I went and saved one wp blog to xml then attempted to import it. Everything went well until we got to the part of “Assign Authors”. I chose my name and clicked submit, and that was it. The status bar looked as if it were working for about 2-3 minutes then I received 2 errors. One was a timeout error and the other was a “503-Service Unavailable” error. Anything I can do to import properly. Most of the posts are now on my blog but none of the categories are available.

  So most of my content made it to the wp blog I wanted it to. But now, I have 300 or so blank categories. How did that happen?
