Problems importing wordpress.xml file

    I have two problems

    I have an old blog that I’m trying to import. It was saved or exported about 2 years ago and has the filename wordpress.2008-05-23.xml
    However, when I try to import it through the import>wordpress options I get told “Invalid file. Please upload a valid WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) export file.

    I don’t understand isn’t it a wordpress file, it even says it in the file name?

    I actually successfully installed it years ago but I uninstalled it because I was upset that it only acknowledged about three months worth of posts when there was about a year and half’s worth of stuff there.

    Is there no way that I can get the whole of the posts imported why does it restrict the amount? It’s only about 5mb in size, the limit is supposed to be 15mb.

    I don’t mean this as a bump, I just had a thought that I wanted to add to this question.

    The original blog isn’t up anywhere, all I have now is the export file. Is that what is stopping it to import? Does importing need the exported file and the original blog to still be up before it’ll work?

    The original blog was hosted by a site that used wordpress coding (or something) or used wordpress to host it’s own series of blogs, but they eventually stopped hosting stuff and I lost it. All I have is an old export file of the blog and I thought it’d be compatible with the wordpress.com import function.
