Problems logging into WordPress (account is via Bluehost)
-
Hello. Earlier today I tried to set up my website for the first time. I wanted a theme called Marl which I downloaded from Google and tried to install as a theme in WordPress. I managed to get it ‘activated’ after some problems but now I cannot login to WordPress properly. I keep getting a blank page with the error:
‘// updater for WordPress.com themes if ( is_admin() ) include dirname( __FILE__ ) . ‘/inc/updater.php’;’.
I also suspect that the problem could also be related to Jetpack as I got an error relating to that as well. I have cleared the browser cache etc and tried to log in from another device – same issue.
Can somebody let me know how to get my WordPress account fixed or reset please?
Thank you,

Hey there, these are actually the forums for sites hosted by WordPress.com, but we can probably point you in the right direction:
– First, if possible, ask your host to help you restore your site from a recent backup.
– You mentioned you downloaded the theme from Google. Can you try downloading it here to ensure you have the right version?
https://jetpack.com/features/design/themes/showcase/marl/– If you don’t have a recent backup, you can manually remove the theme to troubleshoot by temporarily renaming the theme folder. Then, make sure Jetpack is set up correct and connected. Your host can likely help with that.
– If you need more help, your host may be able to help with this, too: https://wordpress.org/support/article/common-wordpress-errors/
Going forward, here are a few tips on finding help with your WordPress installation: https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options/#word-press-org-support
Hoping this helps!

Oh, also I noticed this when installing Marl on my own self-hosted site:
The parent theme could not be found. You will need to install the parent theme, blockbase-wpcom, before you can use this child theme.
You’ll want to download that as well, then, and install it. You won’t need to activate it. You can get it here:

Thanks for your help. Using the links supplied we managed to rename/delete the theme using FTP and fixed the site.
Bluehost also updated PHP for us and said that WordPress.com themes will not always work with WordPress.org (where our account is). The Marl theme still wouldn’t work even after we had installed the parent theme, so we had to fix again.
So we are currently looking for another theme that we like, but at least everything is working now and we know how to fix it if it goes wrong again.
Really appreciate your help. Thanks.

One follow on question – is it correct that WordPress.com themes will not always work with WordPress.org?
-
The answer is very simple: you can’t download a wordpress.com theme unless it has a version suitable for the open source software wordpress.org.
You find a lot of themes for wordpress.org at https://wordpress.org/themes/ -
I hadn’t even realised the difference between WP.org and WP.com. The mist is starting to clear, thank you. It looks like WP.org is the open source system and WP.com is the commercial implementation that offers hosting etc?

That’s correct.
WordPress.org is where the WordPress community makes and supports the open source software.
WordPress.com is one of many hosting providers for that software, but we’re a managed host, using a slightly modified version of that software.
is it correct that WordPress.com themes will not always work with WordPress.org?
Not exactly :)
WordPress.com themes are created to work on our modified version of WordPress. But for every theme we release here on WordPress.com, we also release a version that’s compatible with the open source software. Some of these get submitted to the theme directory at WordPress.org/themes, but all of them can also be downloaded directly from the theme showcase pages here on WordPress.com/themes.
If you have your stand-alone WordPress site connected to WordPress.com through the Jetpack plugin, you can also install our themes directly to your site from the WordPress.com theme showcase, i.e. then you don’t need to first download the theme as a .zip folder, and then upload that in WP-Admin.

Actually, I marked this as resolved before I saw your reply kokkieh. That makes much more sense now :)
