Problems Publishing Posts

  • Unknown's avatar

My posts are not displaying after I hit “publish.” I noticed after I first had trouble, that somehow my settings had reverted to an incorrect time zone. I’ve fixed it to my current time zone (EST) but when I click on the “publish” button, I get a message that says my post is live, but then it does not show up on my blog. Can you help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I’m sorry you’re having trouble with publishing your posts, and I’d be happy to look into it for you!

First, can you let me know the exact steps you take to write and publish a post? (For example, once you are logged in to WordPress.com, can you explain step-by-step what you do to create the post? Do you save a draft before publishing? Do you open anything in a new browser tab or window?) I know that can be a bit tedious, but it will really help me investigate this.

    Hi Rachel,

Thanks for helping me out! So, when I first logged in, I clicked on the “new post” icon and then I clicked on the “text” option. In this particular case, the “new post” popped out into a new window. I wrote my draft and added in pictures and continued to save it as I went along. I did open another browser tab at this point, open the admin dashboard for my blog, and then open up the draft through my dashboard. I made a few more edits and then, when I hit the “publish” button, it gave me a notification saying that is’s been published. But, when I went to my home page, nothing would show up. When I went back to my dashboard, I noticed that it was saved in drafts still, as if it had never published.

That’s when I also noticed the time zone was incorrect (no idea how this happened, but it was set two hours ahead in military time). I corrected the time zone in my settings and then went back to my “draft”. From there, I changed the scheduled publish time to the current time and tried to publish it again. Same thing — it kept saying that it was published, but nothing would show up. I’d go back to my dashboard, and it’s still appearing as a draft. I tried this a couple of times and nothing changed.

Also, an email was sent out to my subscribers saying that the post was published. I spoke to someone who received the email and they said they are able to read the first paragraph or so in the email but when they click “read more” and go to the site, they receive an error message saying that the “page can no longer be found.” Not sure if this helps at all.

Let me know if you need any more info to make a diagnosis! Thanks!

Thanks for this explanation! It really helps.

Sometimes, if you have the same draft open in multiple tabs (such as the “new post” page where you started the post and the post editor in the admin dashboard), it can cause problems when you try to publish the post. Basically, in one tab it will publish the post, but in the other tab it will re-save the post as a draft. When you’re working on a new post, it’s best to only have the draft open in one tab at a time.

I recommend that you start by clearing your browser’s cache and cookies. Then, try opening the draft from your admin dashboard (without having it open in other tabs). Try clicking the “Publish” button, and let me know what happens.

If it still won’t publish, there might be something else going on here and I can keep looking into it for you! (It’s unlikely that the time zone settings caused this problem, but I can certainly look into that further if you keep having trouble with this.)
