Problems Publishing to Facebook
-
I have 2 problems publishing to Facebook. Firstly, when I set a scheduled publishing time for my blog post, it sometimes takes hours before it appears on Facebook and Twitter. I can nudge WordPress to do this if I access my wordpress dashboard. Secondly, for some posts that are published to Facebook, it only publishes the photo as though that was all I was sharing, and only adds a few lines of the content but no link to continue reading. This is quite annoying as people “like” my photo on Facebook but have no opportunity to actually read the content. Is this something I am doing wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Firstly, when I set a scheduled publishing time for my blog post, it sometimes takes hours before it appears on Facebook and Twitter.
Scheduled posts do not actually publish until the first visitor to the site after the scheduled date and time clicks into the site and triggers the publication. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/schedule-a-post/
I can’t help with your second issue. I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance but another Volunteer may answer prior to Staff. I simply tagged the thread so it will not fall through the cracks and escape attention. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Well, that explains it then. Seems a bit strange though. Like the chicken and egg story. You need to publicize it to Facebook and twitter so that people can come and check it out on your site, but it only publicizes it when people come to check out your site. Weird. Anyhow thanks for explaining that.
Awaiting a response to the second question – thanks for your assistance!

The second issue is Facebook’s fault. There’s a bug in the way things are posted there sometimes.
The solution to BOTH problems is what I say a hundred times a day: post manually. It’s hardly heavy lifting.
-
Thanks @raincoaster. But how will publicizing manually be any different to publicizing automatically on a new post? Surely the mechanism is the same? If doing it manually solves the problem then I’ll use that method.
-
Hi there,
Depending on your post format and content, Facebook will choose a format to display your publicized posts there. For example, photo posts will be displayed with a larger photo like you saw.
If you manually share the post on Facebook, it won’t use the same format as a publicized post. You can paste a link to your post in a Facebook update, and your blog post will be shared like other links you post to Facebook.
Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
-
Thanks @rachelmcr. My post format always remains the same (Standard). Some posts are publicised normally, and others as a photo with no link to my site. I am concerned that even if I choose to manually publish a post and use the publicise option, I will have exactly the same problem of Facebook’s formatting because it is making decisions based on the content of the post.
It seems that there is no easy way around this and I’ll have to go manual.
-
Hi there,
When you manually share a post, Facebook uses a different method for formatting it than when the post is automatically publicized to Facebook. But if you run into any trouble with the formatting, you may want to check the Facebook Help Center for more details on how Facebook handles sharing. I hope this helps!

I am having the same problem. But it’s not facebook as twitter is not posting (automatically) either, so I think it’s coming from WP sharing. I can edit the post and tick on posting, update, and THEN it does it. But if I leave it scheduled to post to FB and TW it doesn’t do it. I am having this problem since Feb.16th 2014 more or less.
If I check a post that is scheduled to appear on WP, FB, and TW it appears as correctly scheduled, but after it only posts on WP. And it is not related to people coming on the site as it doesn’t post it several days after either. It just doesn’t post it at all. Is there a problem with WP.com and sharing? -
Yes I noticed the same thing this morning with a scheduled post. Even after viewing the site from my browser it still didn’t Publicise to Facebook or Twitter. One remedy that I know is prescribed is to deauthorise the WordPress app from your Facebook account, remove your Facebook and Twitter accounts from WP Publicise settings, and then start again restoring the connections.
I guess what I am coming to see is that WP and/or Facebook don’t play well with others. If you want a fool-proof method, forget about Publicise, publish manually, and then share your post directly from your website for both Facebook and Twitter.

@marcarlt @empleoarquitectos – Scheduled posts do not publish until someone visits to the site which triggers the publication.
So in an instance where you schedule a post for 9:00, if no one comes to your site until 10:00, then that is when the post will be displayed on your site, as well as be publicized on Facebook. The timestamp on the post will still be for 9:00, regardless of when it is actually published.
If you are at all concerned about your posts and shares going out at exactly the time you specify, the you can either visit your own site at that time (which triggers the post to publish) or switch to manual posting and/or sharing on social media.
See: Schedule a Post

Thanks staff-totoro. I realise that but my problem last week was that even after my scheduled post was published (I visited my site to make sure), it didn’t publicise to either Facebook or Twitter.
-
@marcarlt – We recently rolled out some code fixes for a few users who were also having problems with their scheduled posts sharing to social media.
It is possible that you were affected as well, so can you keep an eye out for future posts? You may also want to disconnect (and reconnect) your affected connections to be safe.
Let me know if you have any more problems and I will be happy to take a closer look. :)
