Problems related to 'guests'

  • Unknown's avatar

Our blog is the only communication channel for our association…
So; it’s very important that each makes a subscription in order to receive a notification for any new entry…
Problem is that I don’t understand how to manage those subscriptions available for everybody.

1st pb : for every new member I send a message inviting him/her to give an affirmative answer to the request… 2 cases :
    – for some people, they just click and the request is approved. They’ll receive notifications simply in their EmailBox without any additional action. They’ll appear in a ‘Email subscribers list’ with their complete email address…
    (https://wordpress.com/people/email-followers/xyz.wordpress.com)
    – for others, they’re requested to create a WordPress account with Login/Password and they’ve to use it every time they’re visiting the blog!! They appear in the ‘Subscribers list : (@azertyuiop)
Is there a possibility to edit those “pseudo”

Why is it different?? I’ve never found any explanation
There is another entry for the subscribers :
    https://avaeteretere.XYZ.com/wp-admin/users.php?page=wpcom-invite-users
Once again, this list is different from the other one !!

2nd pb : some subscribers disappeared, even if in the list, never received notifications (or, it stopped after a while). I’ve tried several methods to make them ‘in’ again without success. I even changed the status of one of them as an editor… visible in the list of editors/administrators etc… But, never received any notification for the last 4 months.

I’m sure I’m missing something there, but what.

3rd pb : people react to our posts by imputing commentaries. When doing so, their name appears in the 1st line. Sometimes, it’s the email address, sometimes the last name…
Is there a possibility to change that : some members request to have just their 1st name visible. Any idea ?

I hope you understand what I’am asking. If needed I can provide screen-dumps or give more details.

    Thanks

    Jeff

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @avaeteretere, there are a few ways folks can follow the site:

    – by email only: one easy way to get email subscribers is by adding a form to your widget area:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/

    – by the WordPress.com reader, as a WordPress.com user. If someone is already a WordPress.com user, they won’t need to create an account. They can choose whether or not to get email notifications.

    – as followers of a private blog: this requires a WordPress.com username and password, so if they don’t already have one, they’ll need to create one.

Can you tell me what method you’re encouraging your readers to use?

Your answer to that will help me solve the 2nd question as well.

For the third issue, please link to a comment where that problem appears. I’ll take a look.

    Hi,
Still very confused about how this system works…
Most of the time, to ‘invite’ people, I use the following form (see image n°5). I input the emails on top, plus a personal message in the 2nd box.
    Results as shown :
    – some of them are identified via their email, some others via a sort of login based on a combination of 1st and last names.
“sylvie….” for example : she first was a simple guest (abonné in French). Few months ago she stopped receiving notifications about new posts. I’ve tried everything (Erase and create a new subscription, etc) Finally, I upgraded her for a new role : Contributor, that has been accepted by the system (last column). But still, she doesn’t receive ANYTHING !!

    Another item :

Just to try and understand, I’ve created a new subscription for me, with a different email address starting for the cover-page of the blog. As an anonymous reader, you’re prompted to subscribe (Img 1 to 4)
Everything looks fine, singing and dancing. I do appear in the list (img4), but NOT in the other one (img5)!!
And worse; I don’t receive any notification!!

Third issue : For this one, I’ve to do more research because I think it may be solved locally.
But, something may be linked: one of our editor (Jean-Philippe) appears in the editor list as jpmduncan (which is the 1st part of his email. In a comment, he can input whatever he likes (JP or JPhilippe, you name it) BUT as an editor, his signature is ‘jpmduncan’ which is not very attractive, I’d like to change it for the first name (img6)

Hereafter a link to a Zip file for the 6 screen dumps.

If any pb, do not hesitate to ask for more info and sorry if sometimes my English doesn’t express -exactly- what I’ve in mind…
    Thanks
    Jeff

  • @avaeteretere invitees are different from followers. Followers don’t need any special access to a public site; they can just sign up and follow.

On private sites, folks have to be invited even to view it.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

You’ll want to be sure you understand user roles, too:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

But since your site is public, no need to add your users this way.

OK, I got it… invitees vs followers.
My blog is public… so everybody in invited as an ‘invitee’.

    But, doesn’t explain why :
    – about 50% of them are obliged to login!!
    – and some of theme don’t receive any notification, even if they appear in the lists as followers

Last point is it possible to edit the names of the contributors. In my last message I sent a screen dump about this problem : some contributors/editors/administrators are displayed by a login AND their 1st name, some others don’t (only the login)

    Thanks

    Jeff

  • some of theme don’t receive any notification, even if they appear in the lists as followers

This depends on their notification settings. If someone wants notifications but is not receiving them, have them check in with us and we’ll check their settings for them.

about 50% of them are obliged to login!!

These would be the ones you’ve added as invitees, since that process would have them create an account.
