Problems using theme 'Twenty Fifteen'

I like Twenty Fifteen because of the large header area and clean cut design. When I try to load a header image I run into two problems. First, the theme gives sizes for a) main column of 660 px wide, b) sidebar of 248 px wide and c) header image of 825 px wide by 510 px high. Second problem, when I load a theme header image it seems to go into the sidebar at the left and is very large, while the header image also goes into the header area and is cropped off, showing only about 1/3 of the image. I try different sized header images, all with the same result. There is an indication that different approaches are taken for a wide screen (desktop, which I’m using) or a tablet with a small screen. All in all, I’m confused and would like to start over. Ideally I would like a full screen wide header. But, what happens with tablets?
