Problems when exporting a blog…

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I’m about to transfer my “.com” WP blog to a more ‘professional ‘.org’.
So, I’ve prepared an ‘export’ of my entire data.
The result a 576Ko zip file. When unzipped I have 3.XML files whose sizes are ~2.5Mo or below.
The problem : when importing the 3 files in the brand new ‘.org’ (as well in my standalone installation on my own machine with MAMAP and :LocalHost) a large part of the menus where disabled…
In fact the parent/child link was absent on about 50% of the items.
Another fact : the Media Library
A large part of the photos are missing but some of them are present 2 or 3 times. Any possibility to export the media library alone and import it later in the new blog.
If needed the link to the ZIP file:

    Thanks

    Jeff

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • a large part of the menus where disabled…

Check your customizer to see if another menu exists there. Remember different themes have different menu locations, so your old menu may not automatically pop up in the new theme.

No, but if this happens you might try creating a new installation and importing again, carefully keeping an eye on any error logs. My guess is that you’re getting timeouts. You can also split your export into smaller files ( WXR Splitter).

If you need more help, check in the WordPress.org forums:

    Good point, I’ll try this.
But, of course, this provokes another set of questions…
    – Any recommendation as a Splitter for Mac OSX??
    – Which size would you recommend ? (less than 2Mo? 1,5Mo??)

    Thanks

  • @avaeteretere I can’t recommend anything in particular. But I use WXR Splitter. I would go ahead and make the files as small as you can. That way if the trouble is in just one of them, you’ll have the cause narrowed down a bit.

    Hi,
So… I did so, unfortunately it didn’t help.
    2 images attached :
What it should be (Menus and sub-menus)
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/905zn4diwkd3qf5/ATT%20WP0.jpg?dl=0
    And what I’ve got :
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/4quxwdfdm3654k6/ATT%20WP1.jpg?dl=0

I split my XML files (9 instead of 3 when beginning) and the result is even worse. AND, finally, my media library is totally empty!!
I may be doing something, but I’d like to be sure to have a REAL archive when needed.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Hmm, looks like there may be some discussion along these lines at the WordPress.org forums:
    https://wordpress.org/search/menu+structure+import?forums=1

Also I looked at your site, and it would seem you didn’t have a custom menu; it was just importing along the lines of the page hierarchy. Is that correct? If so you might consider looking for a plugin that will do the same thing for you.

I’d ask around in the WordPress.org forums. :)

    Hi,
You’re right, no custom menu, only pages hierarchy.
Doesn’t explain why a large part of the ‘menus’ are imported and some others no…
Never heard about a plugin ‘doing the same’.Any name in mind??
    Thank you
Doesn’t explain either why my ‘Media library’ is NOT imported…
    Jeff

  • Doesn’t explain either why my ‘Media library’ is NOT imported…

For that, you may need to check your hosts settings. If some of the media library came through but another part did not, you can try re-running the import. If none of it imported, ask for help in the WordPress.org forums. They may have you check your server logs, etc.

As for a page hierarchy menu plugin, while I haven’t used this plugin and cannot vouch for it, it looks like it will do what you want:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/auto-menu-from-pages/

Feel free to explore other options at WordPress.org .. it’s part of the fun of running and supporting your own copy of WordPress! :)

Good point. I installed the ‘auto-menu-from-pages’… and now??
I understand the concept : from time to time, you save your menu structure. OK, and now??
How can you retrieve this structure, import it with all your pages data?
I haven’t found any indication about that.
    Any idea??

About the data export/import.I’ve tried different options
    – export ALL…
    – export Media alone (and Articles and Pages also.
    Result : even worse :
For most of the photos : ‘Impossible to get this file xyz.jpg’
Pages : only 2 pages (instead of 110) were imported

    Thanks
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

Regarding the image issue, make sure you select “Download and import file attachments” at the time of import. If this is what you’ve tried already can you provide a link to one of the images on the new site and reference the same image on the old site so we can take a look?

For the menu issue, you could try to create a custom menu on the old site. Open the Customizer – https://avaeteretere.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php?return=%2Fwp-admin%2Fnav-menus.php – then go to Menus > Create Menu and add all your pages to the menu. Then make it the Primary menu – check that it looks correct – and run the export again.

We’ve also got a Guided Transfer service if that helps. For $129 one of our Happiness Engineers will transfer the site for you but we can only transfer to one of our recommended hosts. There’s more info here:

    That’s may be the point…
When I try to import a ‘xml’ files (as produced before by the ‘export’ command) I’m always facing the same problem (locally on my ‘LocalHost’ standalone server, or on the remote server)
If I select the ‘Download and import file attachments’, nothing happens.
The system seems to be frozen.
And if I don’t mark the ‘download…’, the system reacts immediately, importing, BUT, with a lot of errors (Impossible to import this file…)

    Hi Jeff,

I don’t think it will work on a local server on your computer unless it’s accessible on the web. Try importing to a live site that can be accessed from a web browser and is able to communicate with the old WordPres.com site.
