Problems with autosave and preview

Hi,
I’m enjoying working on my wordpress.com site, but a couple of unrelated things are frustrating me.
1. Sometimes autosave just keeps on going without ending. It says “autosaving” but has obviously hung up. I can keep writing content, but it isn’t saved, and I can’t manually save it while the autosave is supposedly going. The only way I can get out of it is to copy the content and start a new page with that content, and save that. Which isn’t very satisfactory if it keeps happening.
My internet does seem to be slower than usual, but this shouldn’t delay autosave for very long.
Is this a known bug? Is there a way to manually save while autosave is hung? As a last resort, can I turn autosave off? (Yeah I know that’s dangerous, but it’s a last resort.)
2. Preview doesn’t seem to be working. I save (when I can!) and then press preview and it comes up with a box asking me if I want to open preview in a new tab. I click that I do (there is no other option, so I’m not sure why it asks) and then it come sup with an error message “Oops! That page can’t be found.”
Again, I have found a workaround. I open a separate tab, go to my dashboard, and preview the page there, but I shouldn’t need to do that.
And again, is this a known bug? Is there a workaround other than what I am doing?
I am a bit surprised that such a well used product should have these bugs, so I’m wondering is there something I am doing wrong?

You shouldn’t have any issues with that, I’m wondering if this might be a browser issue. Does the same thing happen when using a different browser?

Thanks. Changing browser (Safari to Chrome) helped with Preview thanks. I must remember trying a different browser with any other problems I may have.
Not sure about autosave yet because the problems with it have been intermittent, and quite possible due to internet timeout or something. It would be great if there was a way to abort a hung-up autosave.

Have you tried clearing the cache or disabling extensions on the browser with the hung autosave? It may be causing the issue.

Hi thanks for your ideas. Unfortunately, I just don’t know. The problem has recurred intermittently, so I’ll have to wait until it recurs to try anything new. I don’t think it is an extension problem because I don’t have any extension on my Safari. But it may be cache. I’ll check if it recurs. Thanks.

@erichat I do think you’re right that it’s most likely due to an internet timeout or packet loss or something like that. Different browsers may handle that differently, but if you can confirm whether the same thing is happening in different browsers (next time that happens anyway) I’d definitely look into stability issues with your internet provider.
You might even check in with them now to see what tests they’d recommend (ping for packet loss percentage, for example) or how they’d like you to troubleshoot it next time it does happen.
I will see if we can find a bug on the autosave feature though: is there a particular bug you’re getting (like Update Failed or something along those lines) ? I do think it’s important to figure out a saving solution even when the internet is being a bit flakey, so any more errors or info you can send would be helpful. You can also open a browser console window to see if there are errors there.
And good move, re: copying the post. If you refresh at that point then paste, is all well or is the problem continuing?

Hi, I will certainly keep my eye open and check both Safari & Chrome if/when the autosave problems recurs.
But if we are looking at the bigger picture, it would seem sensible to have soke interrupt in the autosave, so if it DOES hang up, we have a way out to abort that autosave, reset, and then hopefully proceed. Or else a timeout and reset might be easier.
In the case I reported, once I copied and started a new page, everything was fine. (I just had to re-enter the page title and maybe one or two other things, but the text was fine).

The autosave hung up again just now, while using Safari.
I resolved it by going to code view, copying the page, opening Chrome to the same draft page (which wasn’t up to date), pasted the code in and saved it. It saved OK, then I was able to go back to Safari and reload the edit page and the page was all there. So no dramas.
But I wasn’t able to test if the problem occurred in Chrome because it wasn’t autosaving there.
I think what I will do is do my blog in Chrome for a while and see if the autosave hangs up there. I’ll be back! :)
