Problems with custom header image (with any theme)

I’m having multiple problems putting a custom header image on my blog, http://hoppingintopuddles.wordpress.com

First, I tried to crop an image I uploaded using the wordpress feature after I uploaded the new image. It wouldn’t crop it to the section I chose and would automatically default to the very top of the image and crop the size from there, no matter where I moved the box to crop it.

Second, after I decided I’d just give up and just keep the image cropped how wordpress forced it to be, the full image stopped showing up on my site after a few hours. Instead, the header had the bottom half cut off. Only the top half of the cropped image would show up and the bottom half was just white.

Third, after trying several times to delete and re-up the image on several different themes, the image now does a combination of being cut off, or tile-ing the image (instead of leaving the white space, it just duplicates the top half). It depends on the theme I’m using whether it just stays cut off or tiles.

I’m using firefox with all scripts enabled. I don’t know if it’s a problem with wordpress, the browser, or the picture file. But the image did crop, load, and display well at first, even though the selection of where I wanted to crop the image was ignored.

It’s not that big of a deal and if I can’t find a solution here from you guys, i’ll just live with a default header. But still, it would be nice to solve considering I already put in a significant amount of effort into it. Thanks a lot!

I would recommend just sizing the image in photoshop to the precise size you need and then loading it up. It avoids all the ickiness of playing with in in wordpress. :)

And also, we’ve had some very weird things going on with images the past couple of days. It’s not usually this problematic. But yes, do crop it exactly before uploading. That will save you tons of effort.

Ah…alright, I guess I’ll try it out after resizing. Does anyone know if iphoto (or any other free, simple app) on macs will let you enter a certain size to crop at and create a box or something (like wordpress’ custom header image uploader does) to crop at that size? (sorry for the long question)

I don’t really want to resize, as it will stretch/shrink the picture and I liked the area that I cropped with the wordpress crop feature.

You should be able to just crop it exactly the same on your computer as you can with the WordPress functionality. I use lots of different programs, but it would surprise me if iphoto didn’t have a cropping option and a sizing option.

hmmm alright…I’ll click around and try it out. But what I’m saying is…I can’t find/don’t know a way to, say, enter a specific size like 700×150 and have the program create a “crop box” of that size to…”cookie cut” the image out.

Crop first, then check the actual size and then you can tweak it little by little.

yeah, i can do that. But I think the “crop box” thing should be an implemented feature in basic editing software. Of course, if I didn’t run into this problem in wordpress, I probably never would have used it, but still…I don’t use a lot of other features either.

iPhoto only has options to constrain images to a certain aspect ratio with a crop, not a definite pixel size. You will need to use PhotoStudio, Gimp, or some other editing software.

thanks for the tip. I’ve sort of lost the motivation for the header thing (i know, it’s not that much trouble but some of the default headers are pretty cool). But while checking out info on Gimp, I’m curious about the app now. It seems like a great program from what I’m reading and I will probably check it out soon. And I’ll probably try to solve the header image problem to try out the program.

thanks to everyone who helped out.

    For reference:
There are many programs which you can use to optimize images.
Packages such as Photoshop / Paint Shop Pro will do it, but there is no need to spend money on doing this. These are free:
    – Irfanview
    – Picasa
    – GIMP
    – Photofiltre
    – FastStone
    – Pixia

    Optimize your images

I have been trying for over an hour to find a theme that will not maul my custom header. I make the image exactly the right size specified by the theme, and it still crops my image and magnifies it so that it looks all fuzzy.

I use Photoshop to edit. I am using Firefox to build the blog. I have Mac OSX.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

can you give us a link to your blog with one of the fuzzy headers? Also, a link to the original image file would be good, too.
