Problems with getting started.

I tried Word Press in 2010 and got squeamish about navigating around on it. Now it’s two years later and I thought I’d try it again, but I am still having a lot of trouble. Please help me.
    1. I decided to use the Blogum theme, but am unable to get the hyphen off the page (the theme has it located to the left of the title “Animal World News” on my page).
    2. I want to be able to increase the size of my subtitle “An endangered species of journalism … an exotic brand in news”, but there is nothing listed in the appearance page to do this.
    3. I have the page “Home” listed twice on the page when it should only be listed once. When I went back to the appearance icon and clicked on adding/editing pages, the page for “home” is not listed twice.
    4. Pages (again). I tried to add an “About Us” page and a “Contact Us” page and what happens is, it lists vertically along the left side of the page instead of listing horizontally just underneath the subtitle and above my faux break line (described below).
    5. I have tried several times to crop a picture that would go under the title of my blog (Animal World News) and the worst thing happens: I only get the part that’s in the background. It will not show the subject in the picture, only the solid color, no matter how hard I try to crop it. So I decided to take some creative license by using it as a faux break line to sit between the title, subtitle and would-be contents, but the image will not thin out into a narrow line. In fact, I seem to be stuck with it at this point, and it won’t go away.
    6. Question: If I already have Word Press, why would I need to get hosting from a hosting site? Can’t my site sit in Word Press? Please let me know. Kind thanks.

Are you talking about the blog http://animalworldnews.wordpress.com/ ? This is a protected blog and I fear no one can help you solve your problems properly without seeing it.
    But here are some instructions:
    1. Can’t see it so no idea about it.
    2. You can not do this unless you buy a custom CSS. See .http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/
    .https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/font-size-34?replies=3
3 and 4. Go to Appearance > Menus > Create new menu > Pages > View all > Check the Home, about contact etc which you want to add > Add to menu. Now Theme location > Select the newly created menu as Primary menu > Save changes.

Hi, please tell me what I need to do to make my page public and I will do it so you can take a look at my page. Also, I own the domain name for animalworldnews.com. Why does it have wordpress in my domain name? Please let me know, as navigating Word Press isn’t exactly one of my strong suits. Kind thanks!

Before you go on, do review this:

    http://learn.wordpress.com

It will give you the basics of WordPress.com.

http://animalworldnews.wordpress.com/ is a WordPress.com blog. The custom domain http://animalworldnews.com/ can be connected to it for a $13 annual fee http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

If you are a beginner, please drop the idea of doing web design in WordPress.com. It isn’t as easy as you might think. If you purchase the Custom Design upgrade, staff help is available, but the help consists of telling you what changes to make to the CSS code of the blog. If you’re not comfortable working in code, you’re much better off just getting a theme you like and working with it as-is.

To make your blog public, go to Settings->Privacy and select Public there.

I have made my site public so that you can take a look. I will look over the information sent my way, but I doubt that it applies to me, as I have already selected a theme and am having trouble navigating and tweaking it. But thanks, all the same.

Raincoaster, thank you for the links for getting started. I was in the process of reading through it and learned that I needed hosting to transfer my domain name to. I used BlueHost but am having second thoughts, since it costs so much more than the $13 a year fee for wordpress.org. I was wondering what Blue Host offers that wordpress.org doesn’t?
    1. Can I have advertising on my site with wordpress.org?
    2. Do I get better themes to choose from with wordpress.org that actually look like a web site?
    3. Can I have a .com on wordpress.org?
Please let me know, as I didn’t see any of these questions in the forum.
    Thank you.

    1) you cannot have ads with WordPress.com. You can have ads with other hosts depending on what they allow.

    2) WordPress.org offers literally thousands of themes. I don’t know what you mean by “a website” so I can’t say if their offering are more website-like.

    3) Yes.

Actually, what I first asked was if I could have advertising on my site (or blog) on wordpress.org, not wordpress.com. Would you happen to know? When I spoke with Blue Hosts’s tech support last night, they told me that there was no difference between Blue Host and WordPress.org— and that I would be getting the exact same thing, but there’s quite a price difference between Blue Host ($142) and wordpress.org ($13 a year with my domain already purchased elsewhere). Is there any truth to this?

There is only one advertising program called WordAds at WordPress.com and it’s for blogs on their own domains. This is the homepage for the WordAds program: http://www.wordads.co/

Aside from a blog being accepted into WordAds, no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.com

If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
