Problems with images and Attachment page / Custom URL settings
-
Hello again,
has something been changed on the account settings
Do you mean this page? https://wordpress.com/me/account Somehow I don’t think you meant something else. Can you give a direct link (I won’t be able to see it but Staff/kokkieh will later)?
Will look at your screencast and then post back tomorrow. Already night time here.

“Do you mean this page? https://wordpress.com/me/account”No I was just wondering of something somewhere had changed because I don’t remember the behaviour in the screencast where the image links get set incorrectly the first time then work the second time. You’ll need to check the screencast to see what I mean :)
Don’t worry, it was just a thought, if nothing has been changed then I’m probably remembering incorrectly

Hello again – I looked at your screencast and it is exactly the same experience I’m having in the WP Admin Post Editor on my test site from the point of adding images in my post.
I’m also initially getting the 404 – Not Found error when linking an image to an Attachment page. Looking at the Post HTML it seems the Attachment page link is not created.
When clicking the image to edit after inserting the image in the Post the Link to initially shows as a “Custom URL.” Changing the Link to: to “Attachment Page” updates the link in the image, but regardless the image now opens in the Photo Carousel and not on an Attachment page.
So now we’ll need to wait for Staff to reply.

And I just want to add a note for Staff that it appears we both used Firefox. I’m using v54 on Win10Pro PC.

Thanks for the video. The important detail here is that you’re first uploading the image to the media library, and then inserting it into the post. It does appear that the attachment page isn’t created correctly at that time.
This appears to be a bug in WordPress Core, as I can replicate it on a self-hosted site as well, so I’ve filed a bug report on that end so they can look into it.
If you upload images directly via the editor using the Add Media button this shouldn’t happen.

@kokkieh – just also noting that I experienced the same thing when adding existing images from the Media Library. The images inserted in my test Post were uploaded quite a long time ago.
Does this bug also affect how individual images are displayed when clicked, i.e. appearing in the Photo Carousel rather than on an attachment page?
-
Were the existing images ever used in/attached to posts? Attachment pages are created once an image is attached to a post, and it looks like it’s this process that’s failing.
Regarding the gallery view, it appears this is intentional – a change was made in December last year that on sites that have the gallery carousel enabled, linking a single image to the attachment page will open it in the carousel lightbox instead. To prevent this from happening, you have to disable gallery carousels in Media Settings in WP-Admin.
I don’t think this is mentioned in any of our documentation, so I’ll make sure it’s updated.

Yes, it looks like unattached images are the issue here. Being a test site I probably uploaded them in one go via the Media Library uploader first and assume that some became attached to posts through various actions, but others remained unattached.
Once I edited the “Link to” parameter in the Image Details screen in my test post here (private site-staff only), the formerly unattached image became attached to the post.
Thanks for the explanation and for updating the documentation regarding single image display in the Photo Carousel. I like!

@justjennifer
Yes, I’m using Firefox 54 on Ubuntu Mate 16.04@kokkieh
“If you upload images directly via the editor using the Add Media button this shouldn’t happen.”
Ah this explains why I thought that it was an intermittent issue. I use both methods and I didn’t connect the problem to the upload method.“… on sites that have the gallery carousel enabled, linking a single image to the attachment page will open it in the carousel lightbox instead.”
OK I understand now and I’ve found the setting thanks.Thank you both for the first class support :)

Happy to help. I’ll also update here if I get any more information on the bug report I filed.
