Problems with images being unattached after moving wordpress.com blog to Dreamh

  . I’m running into a problem migrating my blog from wordpress.com to WordPress on Dreamhost, and a very pleasant and helpful support person at Dreamhost has said that the problem has to be coming from WordPress.com.

  Here’s the problem in a nutshell:

  1. I Exported the xml file from my wordpress.com blog, where all the images are properly attached to their blog posts
  – There are 194 posts
  – 858 images
  – 4 unattached
  2. In my Dreamhost account, I create a new “deluxe install” of WordPress, which creates the new SQL database for me as well
  4. I import the exported xml file into the new “deluxe install” of WordPress on Dreamhost. After getting many 500 errors, I finally get all the 194 posts imported, but more than 700 images are unattached.

  5. After deleting the first WordPress installation and the database on Dreamhost, I re-install wordpress and then contact Dreamhost tech support. The support engineer was very responsive to the ticket, and he tried importing the xml file from scratch. His import from the xml file would up with some images in the media library being duplicated during the import process (so there were 890 images in the final media library), and almost all of the images again wound up as “unattached”.

  From what I can see in the XMl file doing a spot check, the images are correctly tagged in the xml file with their correct <wp:post_parent> ID number. I also verified that the xml file has the correct information by creating a new wordpress.com website, where the import process correctly imported all the images: this test site has the correct number (no duplicates) of images, and all images were properly attached to their posts.

  According to the Dreamhost support engineer, the problem with the import into WordPress on Dreamhost is happening somehow on the wordpress.com side. Since I know that WordPress.com touts the ability to migrate a blog from wordpress.com to Dreamhost, I’m not sure what I’m missing to make this work. Can you figure out what I need to do in order to get my wordpress.com blog properly imported into WordPress on Dreamhost?
