Problems with menu after an attempted theme switch

  • Unknown's avatar

Yesterday, I tried to switch my blog from the “Chateau” theme to the “Nucleare” theme. The switch made a mess of my menus as they appear to the public.

The biggest problem was that some of the drop down menus I had constructed for my main menu did not stay as such through the switch while others did stay intact. There seemed to be no reason for this as, when I looked at the menu structure in the admin function, everything looked just as it was before the switch. In short, the public page showed disarray while the admin page indicated perfect order.

A second problem was that several of the main menu items that appeared after the switch were items that I had deleted permanently quite some time before. Quite how they were able to reappear is a mystery to me.

I decided to revert to the “Chateau” theme and my main drop down menus are now as they were before the attempted switch. However, the items in my sidebar menu have vanished from both the public page and there respective spot in the admin function.

I have three questions from all of this:

    1:
The menu items in my sidebar were a lot of work to compile and I don’t look forward to having to do them all again from scratch. How do I get the items and previous formatting from my sidebar menu back?

    2:
The preview image I got of my blog in “Nucleare” gave me no indication that a mess would be made of my menus. If I decide to try switching themes again, how can I ensure that my menus stay intact as they were in the previous theme?

    3:
I switched themes on my other blog less than six months ago from “Andrea” to “Plane” with no issues at all; all my drop down menus on that blog stayed intact and made the transition nicely. Could my problems yesterday indicate a glitch of some sort in the “Nucleare” theme?

    Thanks in advance

I’m not sure if this occurs in all cases of switching themes, but it is definitely a commonly encountered effect. Good news: nothing has been lost. The missing widgets can be found in the section of the widgets page titled “Inactive Widgets” (below the “Available Widgets” section). The solution? Simply drag and drop them back in the Active Widgets area in the preferred order.

You can’t ensure that it won’t happen again.

Whether or not widgets are retained in the previous location and order after a theme change, or moved to the inactive widgets area, may be theme dependent. Or might now be a universal side-effect when switching themes. I’m uncertain.

  • Sorry you had this trouble when switching themes!

As musicdoc1 said, your previous widgets should be in your Inactive Widgets section in the WP Admin dashboard. If you scroll down to the bottom here you’ll see them:

If you switch themes, your custom menus automatically become unassigned from the previous theme’s menu locations. You need to go into the Menus area to re-assign it, by checking off the box to which you’d like to assign the menu.

I’d have to look at the site in question to be able to answer that. Perhaps your other site only had a default menu, rather than a custom one?
