Problems with nested pages on portable devices

  • Unknown's avatar

My nested pages won’t open on portable devices. On a computer I can click on the parent page and the menu of nested pages appears. Click on the links and the sub-pages open. On my iPad, the menu appears, but the links to the nested pages don’t work. I tried reordering the parent pages in case something “under” the link was interfering. (It does–the twitter button etc will click). The links still don’t work–different things “under” the links are getting clicked. (I’ve changed the order of the parent pages back around to the way I want it to appear.)

    Hi Ali,

Are you referring to the menu item “MY BOOKS & STORIES”? If so, that parent item is working correctly on my iPad Mini. When I initially click the parent item, the submenu is opened up. Then, if I click on the submenu item, the link is opened, and I’m directed to the submenu page. I’ve confirmed this on both Safari and Chrome on the Mini. Can you let me know what setup you’re using?

    Hi Jeremy,
Yes that’s the menu item I mean. By set up do you mean the browswer? On my iPad, I’m using Safari, on the laptop, Chrome. So you can click on the menu item Silk Dragon, for example, and it takes you to the page with the Chinese dragon lamp? For me, it either does nothing or picks up what’s under the menu. Sometimes the links further down the menu (Scorned) work in the iPad.
That’s promising that other people can open the submenu items.

    Hey Ali,

Now that you mention it, Silk Dragon doesn’t seem to be working for me either. The other links are working, just not that one, which somehow evaded my test. It looks like you’re currently relying on WordPress.com to create a default menu for you. Basically, whenever you add a new page, it’s automatically included in the menu. Sub-menus are created when you set a parent page for you menu item.

I’d like to try setting up a custom menu. Can you try to do that following the instructions here?

    Menus

Basically, you’ll be creating a new menu, adding pages, and organizing it how you would like. Then, that menu will take affect instead of the default menu. Can you give that a try?

    Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for checking again and for the custom menu directions. I’ll have to wait until my lunch hour, but I’ll have a go then!

    Keen to learn something new!

Perfect Ali! Please give this a try and let me know if you run into any issues.

    Hi Jeremy,
I’ve done a bit of playing with the custom menu. At first it didn’t work. I had to go back to the old one and get rid of the order designation on each page. Now it almost works. The top item in the submenu (Silk Dragon for example) doesn’t open on the iPad. A window appears that will let it open in another browser tab, which is better than nothing.)
I tried reducing the number of sub-items. (Adding another page and dividing books from short stories) Still no good. The top item in the new page also doesn’t work. I’m thinking it’s a Theme issue??
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks for you help.

Oops…didn’t mean to post that twice.

    Hey Ali!

Currently, on my side, the top link in each menu is opening correctly. Clicking the parent page in the menu opens up the drop-down box. Then, clicking the first item, “Silk Dragon” for example, opens up that menu item in the same page. Can you give this another try?

    Hey Jeremy!
Thanks for replying again. Okay–I just tried all of the drop down menus. Get this: when I was using the iPad in landscape, the top sub items in all three menus (My Pins, Silk Dragon, and One Shandy Too Many) didn’t work. They just wouldn’t open, but the sub items would. Just to see what would happen, I swung the iPad around to Portrait, and Voila! The top items opened.
    Yeah…scratching my head too!

    Hey Ali,

That is odd for sure. Even when I’m in portrait mode, all of the menu items work on my side. I created a screen recording of my iPad Mini screen here:

It’s hard to see the taps on the screen, but basically, I navigated to the Silk Dragon sub-page, the One Shandy Too Many sub-page, and then, the My Short Stories parent page (done by clicking “My Short Stories” twice). Is the issue reproducible across all browsers on your device? Can you let me know what version iPad you’re using?

    Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for the video. I wish I knew how to do that. Horizontal mode when I have the issues. Portrait mode works. I have an iPad 4.

    Hey Ali,

That’s puzzling. The iPad 4 is running the latest iOS I’m sure, which means Safari is up-to-date. I’m having the same experience in landscape mode as shown here:

The menu items are working in both portrait and landscape. Can you try clearing your cache under Settings -> Safari -> Clear Cookies and Data?

    Hi Jeremy–

Good news–It looks like that fixed it! Thanks for all your help.
