Hi John,
The Semalt referrer is one we’re aware of and keeping a close eye on. Your website is not in danger of being hacked, and the referrer doesn’t appear to present any security thread. If you would like, you can block it from your site referrers as described here:
The hits will still show up in the site stats however. We’re looking at potentially blocking this referrer in the future.
Please let me know if you need anything else!

Thank you for taking time for a response. I have been with WordPress for six years. I have always had great praise for WordPress but this time it is different. Hits and counts on one’s WordPress blog site is very important in building and maintaining passion for one’s WordPress blog site. To say that this problem is being “Watched” and “Observed” when we have a spam crawler missing up everyone’s hit count rates WordPress in this area a 2 out of 10. It is a sign of the times in the administration of our country over the last five years of our current President and his administration. It seems this attitude to deal with problems directly in the teeth, is now in many areas of our lives, including WordPress, is now a thing of the past. This is all I have to say on the subject thru my 50 years as a sales trainer, marketing expert in customer service, in the capacity of a corporate consultant.

Hi John,
We appreciate your thoughts regrading Semalt and the ability to remove a referrer from your stats page and numbers entirely. We’re certainly not against the idea of blocking referrers from your stats page. It’s just a matter of figuring out the implementation process and prioritizing it amongst other improvements at WordPress.com. I’ll raise the issue again to our developers!
