Problems with signing in and creating free websites on Saturday, May 13.

Hi, I’m wondering whether WordPress had any technical difficulties on Saturday? I was conducting a workshop for beginners to create websites and there were several technical glitches. Not sure if it had to do with the WordPress site or the wi-fi at the location.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy –
Were you working on WordPress.com? Or using the WordPress installation?
Any error messages?

Hi, I was walking students through setting up a free website using WordPress.com and going through the 4 step process. For those without a WordPress login, they were asked to register with an email, which was rejected for some. There were also issues with getting the dashboard to display completely.

Thanks for those details. It sounds like the issue is due to the email address(es) that they were using. Each WordPress.com account requires a unique email address, so if they have previously signed up with that email for a different account, they wouldn’t be able to use it again on a new account.

This is good to know. That explains one person’s issues. But there was a student who had never used WordPress before. What about the other issues, do you think a problem with wi-fi in a particular location could have caused quirkiness with the dashboard interface and the other problems manipulating web pages?
-
Yes, this sounds like a network issue. Was it very slow to load? Were there any error messages?
If it happens again, my suggestion would be that you try to do a demo from a single computer, in hopes of reducing the impact on the network. Another option is to move over to the classic wp-admin editor. This is less intensive on the network, so for a group of people that might be better.
To get to the classic editor you’ll just add /wp-admin/ to the end of the site address.
As for the student who was unable to sign up, is it possible they had a typo in their email address? Or did it use any + or . in it? You do not need to share it here since this is a public forum, but I’m just trying to track down a cause so we can get them signed up.

One other question…one student changed from a template that she has had for years and then wanted to go back to it, but couldn’t. I assume that’s because that particular one by name, Carolina, is no longer available. And the template she chose didn’t really copy her set up exactly with images, so she had to rebuild things.
-
Correct, that is a retired theme that is no longer supported. It’s best to pick a new one. The newer themes are all mobile responsive as well.
Depending on which theme she changed too would impact the amount of work to get things set back up as she wants. Each theme is unique in how it displays headers, logos, images, posts, etc…
