Problems with the new Twitter widget

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello!

I’m experiencing instability issues with the new Twitter widget. It works just fine… for about 30 minutes, at which point I have to remove it then add it back to my blog. Then another 30 minutes or so later, it displays the message “No response from Twitter”. Up until this new widget came along last week, I was using an RSS feed configured to grab my Tweets, and it would never show that error message. I have seen other posts around in the forums detailing similar issues, but wasn’t able to find a working solution.

    Has anyone found a workaround?
Or is this a known bug currently under examination?

    All the best,
    Catherine

It’s not just you but the problem might well be twitter’s. See the last 2 posts in this thread:

Ah ok, well I’m glad something isn’t broken on my end. Thanks to both of you for replying.

3nxx, I think the best way to understand what Twitter is all about is to visit its homepage (http://twitter.com) and watch the introduction video you’ll see there; that’s how I first got into it. Basically, it’s a micro-blogging website that allows you to post status updates on what you’re up to.

A word of caution though… As these forum threads regarding Twitter problems will attest, the huge success that Twitter has had over the past several months is definitely working against it. For instance, Twitter’s network is so crowded that it often gets very slow. I mean, the whole thing goes down several times a day for me, which makes for a really frustrating and unreliable service. It actually reminds me of a prior experience I had with Freewebs; things get broken and the update/browsing speed is rather abysmal.

Frankly, I’m thinking of ditching the whole Tweet phenomenon… and soon.

I’m also having the “no response from Twitter” prob, but it seems to me to be tied to both wordpress and new tweets. I add the widget. It shows up OK for a while, then I post a new tweet and I get “no response from Twitter” for the widget. I go the Widgets in the Dashboard click Edit for the Twitter widget and without changing anything click “Done”, then Save changes. And the Twitter widget again shows my tweets including the new one. Perhaps the widget stopped working before I tweet, but since I don’t spend all day looking at my blog I’ve only noticed it when I go to the blog some time after I’ve posted a new tweet.

You don’t have to remove and add the widget to make it work again. Just click edit, done, save for the widget. But—it appears—you’ll have to do this every time you tweet. :-( Twitter does seem unreliable, but the fact that you can force a refresh from inside the wordpress dashboard that makes the widget work again makes me think that there may be something wordpress can do fix this problem with the widget.

Nanoreef: Twitter is one of the most unreliable services I’ve ever come across. Chances are that it just happened to work when you went to the widgets.

How I agree with you carocat! I’ve had it with Twitter; it’s been such a mess for the past month. It’s settled then, I’m canceling my Twitter account this week.

Life is short and I’ve got better things to do than bother endlessly with inconsistencies and nonsense like that.

The current Twitter problems are nothing compared to last year! In fact it shows how addicted I was back then already as I stayed with it! ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

Wow, good thing I wasn’t using it last year then!

UPDATE: Ok, my Twitter account is closed and gone. This is actually turning out to be positive; I’ll spend more time on WordPress. So yay!

I’m having the same issue with the Twitter widget. Have to remove/reload it from the sidebar and then it works just fine. This is clearly not (only) a Twitter problem, if it’s a Twitter problem at all.

The strangest thing! But thanks for the tip @nanoreef- if I go in there and do what you suggested it works! Sorry that y’all weren’t enjoying it – I’m just getting started but convinced Twitter is the funnest new thing around, how great to be able to link it to my site.

Go back to using the RSS feed instead. Much more reliable and kind of looks better too!

Neither the RSS feed for my Twitter account nor the widget seem to work. At first it was inconsistent now it just doesn’t work at all, displaying a message “no response from Twitter”. The Twitter widget on my website works, so this appears to be a problem with wordpress.

WordPress twitter widget is not coded properly. I consistently get the No Response From Twitter Message, when my website twitter is working fine. This is a real pain. Doesn’t help the blog to have No Response From Twitter for ALL my Twitter widgets.

The problem with Twitter is entirely WordPress technical brain death. While Twitter will occasionally misbehave, a service like WordPress could very easily synchronize and cache.

This should have been a 3 hour problem. That it persists for many days indicates much deeper technical fragility… WordPress might be flat out broken.

I have Twitter feeding other services and it works well albeit with occasional misses. I’ve also coded to the API which is straightforward. Not that Twitter doesn’t need improvement, but they’ll get there. Its really not hard and the performance requirements are, essentially, trivial.

My recommendation is to give it another day and move over to Blogger. I prefer WordPress but had made the assumptions that they could make computers work… Silly me

WordPress needs to get “Cranial Rectal Extraction” (CRE) on the “to do” list.

I am going to go back to the RSS feed to see if that helps this.. I thought the widget might be nice, but it isn’t worth the hassle.
