Problems with view count

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been noticing some weird problems with my view counts, likes, and similar phenomena.

Posts on my blog get likes without ever being viewed – I simply get the message telling me that X post has Y number of likes, without there ever being that number of views. I’ve also sent it to friends who have viewed it, commented on aspects of it, but their views are never recorded.

By way of example, I have a post up today which has gotten zero visitors or views, but four likes and at least one first-hand account of reading it. Is there any way of getting a more accurate view count?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Likes and shares are misleading when you are talking about page view stats. It’s only when a visitor actually clicks into the site that a page view stat is created. Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com or Gravatar account who is logged into WordPress.com can “like” and “share” your posts in several locations such as in email and the Reader without ever clicking into your blog and creating a page view stat.

You can control the length of the entry sent out on your RSS feed here > Settings > Reading. Choose the “summary” setting for your RSS feed rather than to “full text”. That will compel followers to click into the blog to read the full post which will create a page view stat.

Note that doing that to the RSS Feed does not affect the length of the post displayed on the front page or main page for posts on the blog. To create excerpts there we can split content by inserting “the more tag” http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Also note that you can disable “Sharing” on the same page:
    Settings > Reading
Add to each article in your feed:
    Categories
    Tags
    Comment count
    Sharing

Changes may not appear until you create a new post or your news reader refreshes.

Thanks for such a quick reply. I did know about how to split posts on the main page, but conjecture aside I wasn’t sure about the first part. That explains a lot.

There’s even more here re: mobile full post views not being recorded as page view stats https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-reader-show-full-text?replies=31#post-1373569>
