I already asked my question. I would like to mention that all the help I’ve gotten so far from WordPress Forums has been very useful and helpful. I want to thank everyone that’s helped me up to this point. I think the Forum is a good idea to help people like me. Thanks Again. I’ll wait for your e-mails on my last 2 entries. Thanks Again.

This is a one or the other situation. You have two choices on any blog
(1) All posts on the front page.
(2) Or a static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ and all posts on a different page. The front page of every site or Home by default is the URL of the site.
Every theme has a detailed theme description page like this one is at https://wordpress.com/themes/bouquet/ That’s where set up instructions for it are found. The live demo link is there too.
All support docs are at https://en.support.wordpress.com/
By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. That is for the convenience of your returning visitors, who come to read your latest post, and who are not likely to be happy with being compelled to click through the same static page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit the blog looking for the latest post.
However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. Create your two pages first
Front page:
Posts page:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/After you do that you go to > Dashboard > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/A static page (select below)
Front page:
Posts page:Go to http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php and make the required change.
*Replace NAME_OF_BLOG in the URL above with the actual name of your blog.
Front page displays
Save changes

Hi @daisymae2017!
The tips @timethief has outlined will help you with setting up your static front page (which can serve as a welcome page).
I did want to ask about the theme you’ve mentioned. I don’t recognize “Hello Friends” – bear in mind you will only be able to activate the themes listed here on WordPress.com.
If you click on My Site > Themes, you can search through the available themes :)
-
Do you recognize “Mixfolio” or “Hatch”? There is another theme called “Publication” and I was wondering since theme already has in the middle “Our Trip to Mount Cook” can that be changed to where your trip was to?
-
Yes, those are all themes that are available on WordPress.com :)
Regarding Publication, Our trip to Mount Cook is the title of the first post on the theme’s demo – whatever your most recent post’s title is would appear instead.
More info on Publication: https://wordpress.com/theme/publication

What theme by wordpress would you suggest I use for picture blogs? It could be any wordpress theme that is free and not just welcome themes. I would appreciate your opinion please. I will consider any suggestions you have. Thanks In Advance.

This is a list of all of the free Photography inspired themes:
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/photography/type/freeOf the ones shown there, Blask is probably my favorite. Uses https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/, so if you wanted to you could also keep a separate Blog section on the site :)
-
What do think of Pictorico? I’m thinking about doing a picture blog too. How would you set up the Pictorico theme?
-
Pictorico is nice. It uses blog posts, rather than relying on Portfolios the way Blask does.
One advantage that Blask does have is that it uses what is called a Masonry layout. That means the shape of your images (short rectangle, tall rectangle, square) is maintained. Pictorico displays a grid of squares so on some images on the home page parts of the images may not be visible :)
For info on setting up Pictorico, you can check out the info page:
https://wordpress.com/theme/pictorico :) -
What’s a static page? Can you explain the setup for Blask? Does the Blask pictures stay on the page and my pictures inside? From looking at them both, I like Blask a little better. Both themes have pros and cons.

Hi @daisymae2017,
What’s a static page?
Sure, generally when theme documentation says to set up a static page for the front of your site, it’s saying to go to My Site > Pages > Add, and to publish a page from there.
Here’s a guide on setting a static front page.
Can you explain the setup for Blask?
Sure, so Blask has it’s own guide which you can find here. If you have questions about the steps there, let me know.
Does the Blask pictures stay on the page and my pictures inside?
Hmm, are you asking if the pictures from the demo remain on the front of your site? If that’s what you’re asking, no, none of the pictures from the demo have to remain on your actual site. Instead, your own images would replace the ones from the demo.

If I don’t like it I can change it-Right? Isn’t Blask in Black And White or is it in color. What would you suggest? I respect all opinions.
-
If you don’t like the theme, you can definitely change it anytime you like. You can do that from My Site > Themes.
Isn’t Blask in Black And White or is it in color.
The photos in the demo of Blask are in black/white, but your own photos can be in color. The theme itself doesn’t do anything to adjust the color of the images.
What would you suggest?
I have to agree with Chad on this one. I do like Blask as well for photos. The Orvis theme is nice and also uses portfolio projects on the front page.
-
I like the Orvis theme. What exactly is a Static Page? How do I know if my pictures are 924px wide? How do I set the front page and static page? How do I work multiple color schemes, backgrounds and footers? Sidebar is 276 pixels for the sidebar and the featured image is 924 wide and unlimited height. This is all greek to me. How do I go about setting up my portfolio theme? Also, I see where it says Hello I’m Orvis. I love food. I take photos. Can this be changed to something other than food? If so, How?

What exactly is a Static Page?
Sure, did you get a chance to look over this information from earlier?
https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/There’s a video explaining how it works. If that isn’t clear let me know.
How do I know if my pictures are 924px wide?
So before you upload them, you can see what the size is. On a Windows computer you can right click the file, click Properties, and then click the Details tab. On a Mac, you can right click the file, click Get Info, and then click the More Info tab. Either open will open a window with details on the file and you’ll find the pixel dimensions of the image there.
How do I work multiple color schemes, backgrounds and footers?
Sure, so the color options appear in your Customizer under Colors & Backgrounds. Here’s a link to more information about using that section:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-colors/
Keep in mind that some options are only available after upgrading to Premium.
For the footer, the guide links to information on the Social Links menu:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/social-links-menu/Did you have specific questions about the information there?
Sidebar is 276 pixels for the sidebar and the featured image is 924 wide and unlimited height. This is all greek to me.
Sure, so that just tells the width of the sidebar, and the width of the featured images. The large image you see on the right here is a featured image:
https://orvisdemo.wordpress.com/portfolio/oysters/Generally, as long as your images are at least as wide as the space you want to put them in, they should look really nice. The ‘unlimited height’ part just means that you can use tall featured images and they’ll still look good as long as they are 924px wide. Here’s an example of a tall image as the first image on the right:
https://orvisdemo.wordpress.com/portfolio/fruit-salad/
How do I go about setting up my portfolio theme?
Sure, so that’s what the Orvis theme guide is for:
https://wordpress.com/theme/orvisIt’s best to begin at the top in the Getting Started section. In it, you’ll find a link to using the portfolios feature. You’ll want to add them first because they will appear on your site’s front page.
After you’ve created some portfolio items, the next thing to do is to create the static front page, and give that page the “Portfolio” page template.
Here’s some information about selecting a page template once you’re in the editor for a page:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-options/#template
If you have trouble with a certain step, just let me know which part is giving you trouble, and I’ll be glad to help.
Also, I see where it says Hello I’m Orvis. I love food. I take photos. Can this be changed to something other than food? If so, How?
Certainly. The content you enter on your static front page will appear in place of that text.

What happens if the picture is less than 924 pixels? As for the sidebar, can you put a picture in the side if I wanted as long as it is 276 pixels? I haven’t had time to watch the video or look at any of the links you sent but will look at them.

How do I know if I have a Home Page? I have an About And Contact Page. How do I set a Home Page up if I don’t have one? What goes in a Home Page? Please tell me if I have a Home Page for daisymae2017.wordpress.com. Something tells me for some reason I don’t have a Home Page.
